A truly exquisite late 19th Century watercolour by the renowned and skilled painter, Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825–1904. The painting is filled with humor, showing a whimsical moment between a cheeky young man and a elderly gentleman. The young man leans in towards the old man, one hand confidently reaching towards the old man's arm. The expression of the young man and his posture bring much fun filled narrative to the painting, as though he is leaning in to make a cheeky, maybe slightly patronizing remark or proposition to the old man, knowing he may well be chided for it. The eagerness of the young man and his dog, and the obvious slowness and vulnerability of the old man, make for wonderful suspense. Nicol has truly captured a moment on the cusp of something.
The painting has been monogrammed to the lower left corner and handsomely presented in an early 20th Century gilt, ripple effect frame with glazing.
