About the Item

A fine large charcoal and pencil drawing by British listed artist James Stroudley. Executed in 1931, it is a stunning example of a 1930s Art Deco portrait. Very strong and bold, it depicts a portrait of a young woman. It is very evocative and is in gallery condition. Housed in a fine period gallery frame. Unsigned. Provenance. Private collection. Ex Christie’s London. Ex collection of art dealer Campbell Wilson. Condition. Charcoal and pencil drawing, 24 inches by 18 inches and in excellent condition. Framed in a fine gallery frame 30 by 24 inches. Excellent original condition. James Stroudley (1906-1985) was born and lived in London. He studied at Clapham School of Art in 1923-27, then Royal College of Art in 1927-30, his teachers included William Rothenstein and Allan Gwynne-Jones. Stroudley was a Major Abbey Scholar in 1930-33 which gave him three years travelling in Italy. From here he was inspired by classic Italian painters, notably Giotto and Piero della Francesca. He became a fine figurative draughtsman, but his work was also influenced by the Cubists. He was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Showed at RA, RBA (became a member in 1934), RE and elsewhere. Arthur Tooth and Son and Apollinaire Gallery gave him one man shows. Public collections in Bradford, Brighton, Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry and Rochdale hold examples of his work.

    HERBERT WILSON FOSTER (1846-1929) Spring Inscribed with title beneath the mount Chalk, circular Framed Diameter 42 cm., 16 ½ in. (frame size 61 by 58 cm., 24 by 22 ¾ in.) Herbert Wilson Foster was born in Endon, Staffordshire. He attended Hanley School of Art before continuing his studies in London, Belgium and France. His paintings of rural and domestic subjects were exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1873 and 1899. In 1893 he accepted a teaching position at the Nottingham School of Art, where his pupils included Laura Knight and Harold Knight. Works by him are in the collections of the Minton archives; the Wisbech & Fenland Museum; Leicester Art Gallery; Rushcliffe Council and Nottingham Castle Museum. In addition to his work as a painter he worked as a porcelain painter, working at one point on the tile panels in the Victoria & Albert Museum. He is known to have worked at Mintons from 1872 where he specialized in portraits of contemporary personalities, including members of the Royal Family.
