Jolanta Johnsson
Melancholy

2000

About the Item

Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about the drawing: Melancholy is a nuanced emotional state straddles the line between sadness and tranquility. It can be seen as a peaceful form of sorrow, a feeling often experienced by those with a deep understanding of life and its complexities. Life is a tapestry woven with moments of joy and sorrow, with the balance between the two being subjective and varies from person to person based on their unique perspectives. However, it is widely accepted that sorrows often outweigh joys. Human existence is anything but straightforward. We navigate through life, savoring its pleasures while inevitably facing challenges and hardships along the way. Recognizing the inevitability of these struggles can help us maintain a sense of peace amidst the sadness. I find comfort in this realisation, knowing that sadness is a natural part of life that cannot be avoided. Yet, I also hold onto the belief that it is temporary and will eventually be replaced by happiness. This understanding gives me the resilience to persevere. Amidst this emotional journey, I find myself seated in a chair, enveloped in melancholy. From this perspective, I look out into the world with the eyes of a young woman, aware of the countless events and experiences that lie ahead. In this symbolic illustration, the woman's figure is tilted, suggesting her position on the chair is unstable. I chose this to highlight her mood further.

This is how she writes about the drawing: When it comes to purchasing a blanket, many of us are drawn to the timeless appeal of a plaid pattern, which is often present in abstract art. Have you ever wondered why this particular design is so popular? I must admit, I don't have the answer. However, picture this: two individuals lying on a checkered...

This is how she writes about the drawing: In my intimate drawings, I capture what is closest to me – the private moments that I would hardly want to reveal. And yet, I choose to share them with my audience. The motif of the odalisque, a reclining woman, has long been a popular subject in art. Throughout history, numerous artists have embraced this theme, and some of their paintings depicting reclining women have become iconic, shaping the course of art in their respective eras. Art historians have extensively written about the influence of these works. Notably, the odalisques created by the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, such as his renowned piece “La Grande Odalisque...
