Philip Boileau
Woman With Red Poppies

1905

About the Item

Woman With Red Poppies, 1905, by Philip Boileau (1863-1917) Pastel on paper 35 ½ × 22 ¾ inches unframed (90.17 x 57.785 cm) Signed, dated, and inscribed (cpoyright 1905) on bottom right Description: In this piece, Philip Boileau, known for painting "fair women", is likely depicting his soon-to-be wife, Emily Gilbert, a drama student who was often his model for many of his compositions. Her hair seemingly floats weightlessly around her head, as if it were plumes of thick blonde smoke. The bright red poppies with their green stems melt into obscuring black whiplash lines that are indicative of the Art Nouveau art style. The poppies complement her rosy cheeks and lips, further accentuated by the single poppy in her hair. The green of the flora brings out her piercing cool blue-green eyes from the otherwise warm composition. The portrait of the woman and flowers is backgrounded by wide and streaky expanses of gold, reminiscent of the patina that develops on often-handled brass.
