Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban, Early 19th Century Orientalist Watercolour

About the Item

Watercolour on paper Image size: 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (11.5 x 9 cm) Mounted and framed This is an arresting image featuring a head and shoulders portrait of a bearded man wearing a red headscarf and a type of burnous, a long cloak of coarse woollen fabric. Here, the artist has limited their pallet and juxtaposes loose brushstrokes on the man's garments and a smoother finish on his face in order to intensify his composed expression - a technique that goes back to the Spanish master Velasquez. It is possible that this work was painted in England and that the sitter has been dressed by the artist. However it is more likely that the picture was painted in a location in the Middle East, such as Egypt. Indeed, Alexandria, the gateway to the Nile, was a melting-pot of peoples from all over the Mediterranean in the middle of the 19th century, including many from the Balkans, much of which was still nominally under Ottoman control.
