About the Item
Jim's of Lambertville Fine Art Gallery is proud to present this piece by Dora Maar (1907 - 1997).
Born Henriette Théodora Markovitch in France, Dora Maar was a 20th century photographer and painter most notably known as Pablo Picasso’s companion, model and muse. Long before her nearly nine year liaison with Picasso, Maar was a successful artist. Throughout her life, she created a vast and varied range of work, much of which was only discovered after Maar's death in 1997.
As the daughter of a French mother and Croatian father, she spent her childhood in Buenos Aries. She returned to Paris in 1926 to study art at the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs, the École de Photographie, the Académie Julian, and the atelier of Andre Lhote. In 1931, she opened a photographic studio with set designer Pierre Kéfer. It was then that she adopted the professional name of Dora Maar. Specializing in portraits, nudes, fashion and advertising, Maar’s studio was hugely successful. Exhibitions of Maar’s work in galleries all across Paris soon followed.
In 1935, Maar was introduced to Pablo Picasso. Maar was at the height of her career, while Picasso was emerging from what he described as ‘the worst time of my life’. He had not sculpted or painted for months. Throughout their relationship, Picasso painted many portraits of Maar. In the majority of these paintings, Maar was represented as a tortured, anguished woman. Her liaison with Picasso ended in 1943. Maar was left distraught. She went on to abandon photography and paint largely in private, creating works that were both profoundly personal and emotionally evocative. It was only after her death that these were ever exhibited. Maar's work has been exhibited by Paris Galerie, the National Museum Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Palazzo Fortuny, and in 2019, the Centre Pompidou.

- Plant 131Located in Westport, CT"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...Category
