About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Alex Gonzales' (American, 1927-2020) and dated, '11/58'. A delicate and enigmatic, mid-century, painted collage showing a procession of figures contrasted against an olive green and sky-blue background. Alex Gonzales specializes in abstract human images and landscapes in oil, acrylic and collage. Gonzales graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute and subsequently earned a BA from the College of Arts and Craft and an MA from San Francisco State. He taught art at San Francisco State University and at the American Federation of Arts. Gonzales settled on the Monterey Peninsula in 1962, where he has served as the Chairman of the Art Department at the Monterey Peninsula College. Alex Gonzales first became an artist member of the Carmel Art Association in 1961 and remained a member there until 1971. He rejoined that organization again in 1976 and has been a member since then. He served on their Board of Directors in 1969-70, and again in 1988. Gonzales' works may be found in numerous permanent collections, including those of the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary California Art, the Lytton Corporation, and the Fisher-Price Collection. He has exhibited widely and with success including at the Monterey Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association Gallery, the San Jose Art Center, and the Richmond Art Center among others.

    Signed lower right, 'Thall V' for Victor Thall (American, 1902-1983) and painted circa 1950. A mid-century, abstract oil comprising a centrally placed and expansive star-shaped form accompanied by jagged, linear elements and superimposed on a background of ivory and midnight-blue; a dynamic and elegant New York School work showcasing the artist's characteristic, energetic and painterly brushwork. Born in New York in 1902, Victor Thall first attended the Art Students League in New York City where he studied under Arthur B. Davies, George Bellows, John Sloan and Robert Henri. He furthered his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before leaving for Paris, in 1924, to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julien. He remained in France for six formative years before returning to the United States in the early 1930's. Back in New York, he became friendly with Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky and was both influenced and inspired by the ferment of ideas that developed around the New York School during the late 1940's and early 1950's. Thall was also an active participant in the WPA New Deal Art Project of New York City between 1935 and 1939 and returned to the Art Students League as a teacher from 1947-9. He exhibited widely and with success including at the Whitney Museum Annuals of 1949 and 1950 and the Leicester Gallery, London, in 1961. Victor Thall's paintings are held in numerous private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Newark Museum and the artist is listed in all relevant reference works including Who Was Who in American Art.     Signed lower right, 'Beth Ames Swartz' (American, born 1936) and dated 1967. Primarily working in the idioms of abstraction and semi-abstraction, Beth's paintings and mixed-media works are commonly informed by philosophical and spiritual concepts shared by people of different cultural worldviews, and incorporate both symbols and words in the vocabulary of their visual language. Her art practice has been guided by aesthetic philosophies including Wassily Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, and inspired by various religious and philosophical systems including Native American Healing practices, Buddhism, Jewish Mysticism, and Christianity in order to facilitate communication with viewers on both the conscious and unconscious level. Swartz synthesizes these spiritual traditions in her work with the purpose of revealing the commonality between them. Beth was born in New York City and grew up in Manhattan, and by her mid-teens was studying at the Art Students League in New York in the late 1940s. Her education continued at The High School of Music & Art in New York City, and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree, followed by a Master of Arts degree in 1959 from New York University. Beth Ames Swartz exhibited nationwide including at over seventy solo exhibitions including a solo show at The Jewish Museum in New York. In addition, she participated in three major traveling museum exhibitions and her work is held in the permanent collections of numerous major museums including the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian. She received the Governor's Individual Artist Award in 2001 in Arizona, and a retrospective of her work was mounted in 2002 at The Phoenix Art Museum, with a monograph about her work co-published by The Phoenix Art Museum and Hudson Hills Press. Swartz explores systems of knowledge by translating philosophical concepts into aesthetic visual experiences.
