About the Item

Alexandra Rozenman’s “Cat-a- Mailman” is a 14 x 17 inch watercolor-collage on paper. In a familiar and comfortable landscape with a soft green field and a dramatic dark blue sky with clouds, we find a funny and charming looking half-cat with white wings standing on two feet with a mailbag across his shoulder and a scythe in another. The cat is wearing bast boots. Far away from us, on the horizon line, we see a white building, or maybe a skyline where one of the buildings looks very familiar. It is a small piece from the United Postal Service Priority mail shipping box. This whimsical touch adds humor to the composition, and somehow we feel as if we’ve met this Mailman before. This piece is one from Rozenman’s mixed media series that she created during quarantine. The collage technique connects with an idea of taking something apart and bringing it back together again – an emotion everybody went through during that difficult time. Work is very theatrical and intelligent. The collages are made out of papers the artist colors herself. This gives an interesting feeling of freshness, familiarity and rebirth. 14 x 17 inches, this piece is signed and titled on the back and initialed on the front. Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. The artist states. Whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping change. Rozenman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

  • Rosa Rugosa
    By Penelope Gottlieb
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Rosa Rugosa" is a contemporary mixed media work, acrylic and ink over an Audubon print by American, female artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...
