This scroll-shaped ceramic diptych is intended to hang vertically, like a painting, and was crafted by Saratoga, NY-based artist Anne Francey. The composition is based on abstracted images of nature, contrasting blocks of rich golden-yellow with cool, dark gray and light green accents. The gritty texture of the piece reinforces the handmade quality, yet the piece retains a sense of elegance all the same.
About the 'Scrolls' series:
The artist writes, ' TheScroll series are a reflection on time passing and time to come: one day, our present will inevitably become the past. Is it also possible that what inspired these images and has now been permanently hardened onto the clay’s surface will be part of the past? Will nature or some manifestation of nature as we know it, exist only as fossils imprinted in a rock?'
About the artist:
Anne Francey’s observation of the natural world has always been the point of departure in her clay work, evolving into a constant oscillation between representation and abstraction, organic shapes and geometric order, what's being shown and what's being hidden. Whether starting from a flower, a twig, an insect or a moss. Francey simplifies and flattens their shapes, blurring their visual identity in order to reveal a hidden meaning. Of her work, the artist states, “Could these abstracted forms of insects and plants, hardened for ever in the fired clay, become imprints of the past one day, like fossils of a bygone era?” Anne Francey currently resides in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Anne Francey
Anne Francey returns to the gallery exhibiting selections from both past and current work. Trained as a painter, Francey added ceramic to her studio practice after developing a love and fascination for the ceramic tiles and infinite design that adorn houses and interiors in Tunisia, spending a year at the National Center of Ceramics of Tunis. Arabesques, this endless flow of lines inspired by vegetal forms typical of Islamic art, has translated onto her recent work in the form of simply choreographed lines resembling seed pods, bramble and flowering buds. In her 1988 Flower series, Francey captured the delicate essence of her natural model through vivid movements of paint and animated marks of red and black charcoal on paper and canvas. So simple in their approach, the seemingly effortless designs owe their appearance to the liberated approach Francey takes with the application of her medium. In more recent work, Francey continues the free-hand aesthetic with her work on paper series entitled, Seismography.
