Christine Nguyen
Mountain Water II - Abstract contemporary art - unframed archival print

About the Item

This is a series of five original photo based drawing and painting created on layered mylar as a negative to create the glowing images. The crafted final image is printed onto archival paper: - Series of 5 original images - Edition of 3 - Signed and numbered by artist This image was used to create an art exhibit installed at Los Angeles' Hammer Museum. Christine Nguyen is a Los Angeles based artist. She received her B.F.A from California State University, Long Beach and M.F.A from University of California, Irvine. As an artist, she is inspired by literature, science, nature, astronomy, geology, marine biology. The layering of works, creating depth, process and nature are important elements of her work . For example, salt crystallization has been used on found objects and encrusted on photo based works on paper. The salt crystallization process is similar to preserving some objects, while disintegrating others with time. By incorporating salt crystals onto the photo based paintings, the image presents a mystical otherworldly feel, capturing and refracting light and the slippage of time. Using photography’s processes as a point of departure, Christine Nguyen’s pioneering spirit led her to begin manipulating negatives and onward–creating her own by cutting, layering, and adding on. Nguyen’s subsequent explorations embrace drawing and object making alike, each body of work permeated with a sense of profound discovery. –Julie Dickover, Associate Registrar at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles from 2003 to 2010 Her work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally such as at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kunsthalle zu Kiel, Kiel, Germany; Laguna Beach Art Museum, Laguna Beach; Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena and are in many private collections.

The artist is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner grant awarded to artists with established abilities, established by the wife of Jackson Pollock. His work is held in various corporate and private collections worldwide. Oil Painting 39 x 32 x 2 inches Oil paint, cold wax, silver leaf on gallery wrapped canvas Framing is optional because painting wraps around canvas Ready to hang on wall, signed on the back by artist Video attached for viewing The beauty of geometrical balance in Cimini's series of work evokes a certain quiet beauty. Strong layers of color and brushwork explore depth and emotion to each unique piece. Cimini's work range from paintings with vibrant color and energy to quiet contemplative pieces with rich layering of depths. Using oil paint, wax medium, and marble dust on canvas, the artist creates a harmonious balance on the canvas, or paper, characterized by textured shades of colors, with linear lines and shapes - allowing a symmetrical, meditative composition of shapes and colors to emerge. ARTIST STATEMENT Building on the architectural origins which have been the basis of my work for over a decade, I have started referring to my compositions as random symmetry. That is, creating a balance on the canvas with no discernible pattern allowing a symmetrical, meditative composition to emerge. I employ the golden mean as a reference which can often be seen in the composition. I use oil paint with a cold wax medium, layering the paint, as organic surfaces evolve within the restrained lines of the composition. During the process an environment develops giving an emotional story to the thoughtfully planned out compositions. My color choices vary, sometimes deliberately creating a series with particular color decisions and sometimes allowing the color choices to impulsively appear fueled by intuition and experience. Color remains a constantly unfolding mystery. In a recent exhibition, MATH TO BEAUTY is series of new paintings employing the golden mean as a basis for the geometric compositions which I've come to call random symmetry. This fascinating ratio, frequently found in nature and geometry, is perceived by many to play a role in the human perception of beauty. So much has been written about the golden ratio; to the point that it's hard to discern fact from fiction. But whatever the truth, the golden ratio has properties that has intrigued and inspired mathematicians, biologists, artists, musicians, historians, architects, psychologists, and even mystics for centuries. Using the golden ratio in the cavalier way that I do keeps me mindful of proportion. Just when I think it's working along comes color to challenge my senses. In the end my intentions are to create beauty in my work. As the Greeks put it, the three ingredients to beauty are: symmetry, proportion, and harmony. Born: 1949, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA Education: San Francisco Art Institute School of Visual Arts (New York City) Grants & Awards 2003 Recipient of a Grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation selected by a committee of distinguished art professionals awarded to artists with established ability. "Pradosh’s paintings have a surrealistic quality, the imagery is dreamy and mystical and rendering is such as if there is some kind of romance and magic happening amongst the colours in his palette. His paintings are the result of brilliant culminations of feelings and things that are between imagination and reality." Style : Pradosh’s works can be described as psychic automatism in its pure state. His works are expressive and his palette vibrant and gorgeous. Nature is the frequent imagery that we see in his paintings. Sometimes his imagery is outlandish, perplexing and uncanny as it is meant to shake the viewer and make them to think beyond the theories which they have guarded themselves with. Lot of elements that we see in pradosh’s paintings also come from his childhood days in Odisha. His paintings often take us on a nostalgic ride where we see elements which we were so used to and have now learnt to live without. He uses common elements that we see in our day to day life to convey his feelings and thought which makes his works all the more interesting. His paintings leave the viewer perplexed at the first glance but a deeper look gives the insight into his thoughts that instigate him to create. Pradosh’s paintings have a surrealistic quality, the imagery is dreamy and mystical and rendering is such as if there is some kind of romance and magic happening amongst the colours in his palette. His paintings are the result of brilliant culminations of feelings and things that are between imagination and reality. They reflect his genuine concern about issues he feels for. He emphasizes on the power of imagination and believes that revelation could be found anywhere….on the streets and in everyday life. Through his paintings artist depicts the notion that how our high pace life is making all of us loose that contact from the nature or even with ourselves.
