2011

About the Item

Chewy Burch Edition 17 of 18 24 x 24 inches Limited Edition Print on Paper Signed by artist, verso Acquired from artist studio Print of Chewbacca from Star Wars and the Tory Burch logo. Dale May is a New York based, award-winning, advertising, entertainment & editorial photographer, who has been creating iconic images for over 18 years. Combining his background in painting and color theory, lighting and post-production, May works to make the unthinkable real and believable. Best known for his richly stylized, character-driven, conceptual work, May has captured some of today's most recognizable personalities, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Charlize Theron, and Elizabeth Banks. May also has shot countless bands ranging from Black Sabbath to 30 Seconds to Mars, as well as the Broadway casts of West Side Story, 9 to 5, Hair, and most recently, Annie. Although May has remained focused on his commercial career, his roots have always been firmly planted in the fine arts. He grew up 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia in Chadds Ford, PA. May's grandfather was a big-band drummer and band leader in the 20s and 30s, and his grandmother was a supper club singer. May played the drums from age five and was also artistically inspired by his neighbor, the American Contemporary Realist Painter, Andrew Wyeth. May moved to NY to study painting, color theory, and art history at Parson's School of Design. The foundation of these first few years shaped his current aesthetic style and he graduated in 1993 with a BFA in Photography.

  • David Yarrow Photograph "Vantage Point" of Train in the Western Frontier
    By David Yarrow
    Located in Greenwich, CT
This work is sourced directly from the artist. Framed Digital Pigment Print on Archival 315gsm Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Hand-signed by artist with Certificate of Authenticity As part of my photographic anthology on the wild west, it was always my intent to bring native Indians and a railroad together into an image, but I had no wish to objectify either party. A photograph for instance of a hostile railroad attack by a party of Indians could be labelled as stereotyping or indeed being blind to the provocation of what was effectively an invasion by American settlers, prospectors and capitalists. We entered this project to tell stories, not make overtly political points. After several scouting trips, I found an ideal location 10,000 feet above sea level on the track near Silverton, Colorado. The train owners told us that this section of the track had never been shot before and that sense of ground breaking always gives me a warm glow. The high cliff face offered a sense of a vantage point and the opportunity for the camera to tell a more passive observation story (albeit with a little attitude). The narrative seems entirely realistic as most of the time the natives would observe the Iron Horses from a safe distance with a mixture of fear; anger but also, I would imagine a hint of bewilderment. The driver of the steam train did a fabulous job with the plume - it was a magical sight to see. He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. Many years later David established himself as a fine art photographer by documenting the natural world from new perspectives and the last nine years have been career-defining. David’s evocative and immersive photography of life on earth is most distinctive and has earned him an ever-growing following amongst art collectors. His large monochrome images made in Los Angeles are on display in leading galleries and museums across Europe and North America. He is now recognised as one of the best-selling fine...
