Harif Guzman
"Bubble Gum, " Mixed Media on Wood - Graffiti Collage Art

2013

About the Item

"Bubblegum", a large mixed media collage on wood panel, is a testament to Guzman’s development of iconography to advance visual language. Harif Guzman was born in Venezuela in 1975. However, after moving with his family to New York at the tender age of five, he has since come to call New York City his home. In his youth, Guzman worked for his father — a printer and typesetter — during which, he would come to obtain an appreciation for mechanical reproduction. With a burgeoning affection for typography, in conjunction with his experience growing up in New York City, Guzman would inspire an iconic style worthy of world class recognition. A constant world traveler, Guzman’s work has been exhibited in most continents across the globe. Guzman’s work inhabits, and extends, a tradition established in the 1920s Weimar Republic. His work is characterized by extemporized collage and gritty multimedia assemblage reminiscent of Kurt Schwitters, Robert Rauschenburg, and Mike Kelley. Guzman’s work is a discussion on the process of change and transformation. The found materials he employs are not simply the physical components he works with, but also the second-hand imagery and ideas endemic to contemporary urban existence.
