Jolanta Johnsson
Grey Color Eyes

2024

About the Item

Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about the piece: "The title of this artwork revolves around the grey color eyes of a woman, even though they remain unseen. As an artist, I strive to engage viewers in actively perceiving my paintings, including their titles. This particular piece is part of a series that portrays solitary individuals, both women and men. While it could be categorised simply as a collection titled About People, it is just one of many within my body of work. The human figure holds a central role in art, and my creations are no exception. In the case of this artwork, I have meticulously constructed the silhouette using various pieces. The resulting figure may not possess flawless perfection, but it accurately reflects our human nature. The grey tones that envelop the figure consist of a myriad of shades, resembling delicate streaks akin to a stream of thoughts, worries, or memories. I leave it to the viewer's interpretation to discern the true essence behind these strokes. And what about those closed eyes? Do they too possess a grey hue, are they grey color eyes? One thing remains certain - the black color that permeates the woman's inner self conceals her deepest secrets. She clutches them tightly within her hands, as if determined to safeguard them from prying eyes." The creation of this artwork utilizes the monotype technique, a process involving the artist's use of stencils, which are meticulously drawn and cut out. Additionally, a relief print is applied from a linoleum matrix, adding depth and texture to the piece on professional, high quality Fabriano paper. Hand-painted elements further enhance the uniqueness of each work. The term "monotype" signifies the singularity of the artwork, as while multiple copies may exist, each piece is distinct and stands as a one-of-a-kind creation.
