About the Item
Artist Comments
Dynamic gestural strokes in black swish and splatter above blocks of yellow and grey in this expressive abstract by artist Kris Haas. Drips of black form subtle shadows with markings and scratches that leave texture on its surface. Part of Kris' derivative and ongoing Disjointed Reality series. Her work is rooted in a primal understanding that at any form, shape, or object, whether worn or torn or even due to life's circumstances, there is still beauty coming through. So you will find bits of wear & tear on the painting itself.
About the Artist
Artist Kris Haas creates expressive mixed-media abstracts on paper where she relies on intuition when combining blocks of color with free-form shapes. “I think it is important to give the color space to breathe in order to be understood and seen,†says Kris. After her accident in February of 2004 which left her with a permanent brain injury disability, Kris found herself relying on her visual language. Her process starts with selecting the right image, one that will stand out and call to her, images and gestures that create different feelings and a different atmospheric approach. From there, she decides where the color blocks need to go. Notably, one of Kris’ works was in the permanent set of the hit series Mad Men, featured in one of the offices in the last two seasons. Kris is constantly creating and needs her studio clean and organized. “The tabletop does get messy though and it gets a daily organizational cleaning, otherwise I wouldn't be able to work!â€

- Rest Break in the Gardens, Original PaintingBy Darlene McElroyLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Artist Darlene McElroy paints an impressionist portrait of a woman in a straw hat. The subject reads a book on a wrought iron park bench as her four-legged companion rests by her feet. Surrounded by the flourishing foliage of the botanical garden, they spend a laid-back afternoon in the warm summer sun. A harmonious balance of light and shadow develops in the narrative.About the Artist
Darlene McElroy sees creating art as similar to reading Turkish coffee grounds. A story becomes revealed as one looks at the surface, texture and color. Her works use a variety of materials ranging from acrylic paints to photo transfers and collage. She currently lives in New Mexico and has been greatly influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg. She encourages viewers to search for their narrative interpretation when viewing a work.Words that describe this painting: woman, people, figurative, dog, nature, narrative, storytelling, botanical garden, book, dog, trees, sun, acrylicpaint, impressionism, animals, people, mixed media artwork, yellow

- The Planets Are Aligning, Abstract PaintingLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Artist Margriet Hogue demonstrates celestial alignment through collaged printed papers and tissues. She decorates each planet with unique stencils. Patterns over patterns layer the piece strikingly. The bold contrasts bring the experimental piece a distinguished flare.About the Artist
Artist Margriet Hogue creates layered mixed media paintings inspired by "the contours of the land, the distressed surfaces and the colors of the different seasons," as she explains. Born in the Netherlands, Margriet's family moved to Venezuela when she was 6 months old, and then immigrated to Canada when she was in middle school. As a child, her mother taught her various fiber crafts. Buying her first loom allowed Margriet to pay her way through college, and after graduating, she spent years producing textiles and clothing. Unfortunately, the dust from weaving aggravated her child's asthma, so she started a needlework business called The Essamplaire (old French for sampler). "Whenever we would be on holidays I'd make appointments with museums to see their sampler collections and would request licensing agreements to reproduce them in the form of needlework kits," explains Margriet. "Samplers were part of a girl’s education from the 1500s to the early 1900s and consisted of them stitching alphabets, pictorial images and quaint verses." In 2014, Margriet attended an acrylic painting workshop, which she describes as very freeing after the fine and detailed work involved in needlework. Today, when she's not painting, she enjoys road trips through the mountains to the west coast, visiting family who live far and wide, and continuing to oversee her needlework business.Words that describe this painting: Abstract, circles, mixed media, collage, crayons, inks, planets, lines, text, pattern, abstract, mixed media artwork, grey
