About the Item

Linling Lu is best known for her hard-edge, circular abstract paintings with concentric rings of color. Her human-scaletondoshave been described as inducing states of meditation. Lu’s work also includes sculpturesof interlocking wood blocks, shaped paintings and sewn fabric collages. Her abstractions have been compared to theWashington Color School painters such as Kenneth Noland. Linling Lu’s large scale painting compositions are included in Fields and Formations, A Survey of Mid-Atlantic Abstraction, curated by Kristen Hileman. The 12-artist group exhibition recently travelled from The Delaware Contemporary Museum toAmerican University Museum and remains open through May 22, 2022. Linling Lu: Musical Meditations, a solo show (Feb19-June 5,2022) opened at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the area's premier destination for fine art, contains a series of paintings created from 2019 to the present, many of which were composed during the two-year period of the ongoing pandemic. Lu views these works as a means of “healing from the chaos and uncertainty of life.” Lu’s large, circular canvases pulsate with color and invite viewers to reflect on their own memories and connections with music. Lu’s work was included in public and private collections nationally and internationally such asMicrosoftArt Collection, Capital One headquarters,CityCenter DC, Hall Arts Hotel, and the permanent collection of Embassy of The United States of America in Beijing among a group of artists include Cai Guo-Qiang, Maya Lin, Betty Woodman, Xu Bing, Jeff Koons and Fred Tomaselli. Linling Lu earned a BFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2008 and aMFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting, MICA in 2011 with honor. The artist currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. Works from Chesswoman, Agitated Meditation, and Passage of Time series are recommended to be framed with floater frames. Artist Commentary: This diptych started several years ago during a public art performance called Nike's Advice. I painted 130 feet of unprimed canvas with the public. It was scary! I don't consider myself a painter. I was having to accept Nike's Advice myself ... as in "Just Do It". Later, I used my sewing machine to stitch decorative lines. Gold-leaf was added before the surface was coated in UV filtering epoxy. The works are mounted with copper roofing nails to a stretcher bar with gold painted sides.
