Game of Life

2023

About the Item

In this game of life, we fiercely strive, Chasing dreams, hoping to survive. Each step we take, is a move on the board, Sometimes rewarded, sometimes ignored. We start with a roll of fate's dice, Building towers strong, without any vice. But soon we face battles and fierce fights, Where cunning strategies will determine our rights. We traverse valleys of joy and despair, Where love and loss leave life bare. Friendships formed, alliances made, A web of connections, a priceless trade. We climb mountains of success so high, only to discover they touch the sky. Yet at times, we stumble and fall, In this game of chance, we give it our all. We gather treasures, both big and small, Material wealth, or love that will enthrall. But in the end, when our journey is done, It's the memories we've made that shine like the sun. For in this game of life, it's not just a race, But about finding purpose and leaving a trace. Through hardships endured and lessons learned, Our characters molded, as we've yearned. So let us play this game with delight, Embrace the challenges with all our might. For in this intricate maze, it's not about the end, But the stories we create, the lives we mend, and the people we bond with. About Artist Michael Adetula's paintings convey his fascination for contemporary attitudes which are embellished with fragments of history. Working with images of trendy young people in poses that suggest the hipness of modernity, his characters have on their bodies paintings and designs of elements that tell stories that stretch beyond their present, to the past, or even their genetic memories. Adetula’s work addresses cultural themes of identity, to document how the past reflects on the present. “The time capsules we live in are interconnected in more ways than we can grasp, says Adetula. His primary medium is Acrylic on canvas, which is complimented by his application of colored pens. With this, he can create works that have bold brush strokes as well as intricate paintings on the body that also serve as texture. The backgrounds and paintings of clothes worn by his subjects are similar in rendition, while the details on the bodies of his subjects are painted with a mixture of both mediums. There is an application of the philosophy of natural synthesis whereby outside influences, concepts, and ideas come together in Adetula’s compositions. Colors, symbols, tones, and shades unite in the intricate paintings on the body, which include images of trees, cowries, traditional African combs, and flowers. His depictions symbolize tradition, life, belief systems, emotions, and transitions. Creativity for him, “is a powerful tool for exploring deeply, the cultural heritage of the people. His inklings are carefully arranged to reflect the impact of this ideology in the fullness of time. This is evident in his works such as "A Lady with the Swag" and "The Way We Are." Inspired by a fertile imagination, Adetula ’s evocative paintings simultaneously address contemporary cultural life by adding tinges of the past. This vision helps him grasp the clear essence and meaning of his subjects and themes, and by so doing makes clear his message of giving life to his art, and giving his artful messages to society.

  • I Need Some Love 2
    Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The focal point of the artwork, the man's free-flowing dreadlocks, serves as a potent symbol of individuality and cultural diversity. In many cultures, dreadlocks have deep-rooted historical and spiritual significance, representing a unique connection to heritage, self-expression, and identity. By emphasizing the man's hair in the portrait, Adetula calls attention to the fact that discrimination often arises from superficial judgments based on appearance, whether it be hairstyles, clothing choices, or language differences. The artwork's title, "I Need Some Love," conveys a heartfelt plea for compassion and understanding. It reminds us that discrimination and prejudice have no place in a harmonious and inclusive society. Adetula's creation urges us to break free from these harmful mindsets and cultivate a culture of empathy and acceptance toward one another. The message of the artwork resonates strongly with the call to let love prevail, irrespective of one's origin or outward appearance. Discrimination, whether conscious or unconscious, hinders our collective progress as a society. It erects barriers between individuals and communities, fostering mistrust and animosity. Adetula's artwork encourages us to dismantle these barriers and build bridges instead. Embracing diversity enriches our lives, broadens our perspectives, and fosters a climate of respect and unity. The man's free-flowing dreadlocks symbolize the beauty of embracing cultural differences and recognizing the uniqueness that each individual brings to the table. Moreover, "I Need Some Love" emphasizes the power of love as a transformative force. The artwork reminds us that by approaching others with love, compassion, and understanding, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard. Correcting people with love, rather than judgment or hostility, allows us to foster meaningful connections and open up constructive dialogues, thereby nurturing a culture of growth and understanding. The man depicted in the artwork is a poignant reminder that every person deserves happiness and love, irrespective of their appearance, background, or language. Embracing diversity not only enhances our interpersonal relationships but also contributes to the betterment of society as a whole. When we treat one another with kindness and empathy, we foster a sense of belonging and acceptance that empowers individuals to thrive and contribute positively to their communities.
