About the Item
Monica DeSalvo’s “Preserving Loss” is a diptych with two 24 x 36 inch surreal collages on digital photos printed on watercolor paper. A calm ocean at sunset with pink orange skies blend with gray water pooling around black rocky outcroppings and a lighthouse on Canada’s Campobello Island in the Bay of Fundy. Wide white margins surround the two nearly identical photographs placed in opposite orientations, allowing clusters of abstracted elements to extend far past the image borders. Materials include remnants of DeSalvo’s late father’s paper memorabilia from his engineering profession (such as the translucent graph paper, lists of numbers, and handwritten notes) and her own monotypes printed on them using a Gelli plate. Further abstraction was achieved by enlarging the photographs, creating a blurred, painterly effect.
Each half of the 24 x 72 inch diptych is dry-mounted onto 0.25inch foamcore. The title is written below the left hand image, and the signature is below the right hand image. The panels come with silver rail system spring clips for hanging. The surface of the foam core is slightly dimpled where the clips have been attached. This occurs on the top left and top right corner of each panel. The margins are wide enough to retain the white border if matting or framing.
Monica DeSalvo is a Boston-based mixed-media artist and designer. She received her BFA in Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Her work has been shown in many shows both juried and invitational and is a part of collections across the US and Europe. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston.

Monica DeSalvo
DeSalvo is a Boston-based mixed-media artist blending drawing, printmaking, painting, and design. Her recent work explores and draws inspiration from her late father’s dementia and the journey she found herself on while caregiving. By using collage, she is able to perform “duets” with her father by incorporating his paper memorabilia. In August 2021 DeSalvo was one of eight artists selected from over 60 applicants featured in the Attleboro Arts Museum’s annual juried exhibition "8 Visions." DeSalvo is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

- "The Beauty on the Way There", abstract, landscape, blue, black, grey, redBy Patty deGrandpreLocated in Natick, MAPatty deGrandpre’s “The Beauty on the Way There” is a predominately turquoise blue, black, grey, and red contemporary abstract landscape represented on a 16 x 20 x 2 inch “Ampersand Claybord” block embracing creative photography, mixed media, and collage. Snapshots of a Western United States highway and it’s vast scenic surroundings are printed on Awagami Bamboo Japanese paper in both black and white as well as monochromatic red. The prints are cropped and combined with thoughtfully shaped monoprint fragments and collaged onto smooth fields of turquoise and grey hued water based block printing ink. The graphic design approach to this modern composition is appreciated as the viewer recognizes a glimpse through a car window of distant mountains and roadside terrain. A rectangular red and blue print reminiscent of vintage floral wallpaper...Category

- FoxesBy Melissa PokornyLocated in New York, NY17"x22" Inkjet on aluminum, found objects (Big Red Fox, Little Red Fox), ceramic, vinyl Melissa Pokorny's work focuses on the sense of space, and its role in structuring memory and identity. Her larger-scale sculptures, mixed media tableaus, and installations incorporate fragmented images of landscape and nature that highlight contested spaces, borders and boundaries between the natural world and our presence in it. Pokorny's recent work explores literal and metaphorical attachments , in a call-and-response between people, places, and things. The sense of absence prevails, emphasized by situations that illicit awareness of loss -- of losing one's was, or the loss of memory to time and distance. People go missing, and things are left behind. Mellissa Pokorny has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years. Her large scale, assemblage-based sculptural works have been widely exhibited at venues across the US. Recent solo shows at Platform Gallery in Seattle and Front Room Gallery in New York augment a long career of solo exhibitions, beginning with Gallery Paule Anglim, in San Francisco and continuing with Bodybuilder and Sportsman in Chicago. Selected group exhibitions include venues such as Yerba Buena Gardens, Southern Exposure, Victoria Room, and New Langton Arts in San Francisco, Foodhouse Gallery in Los Angeles, Gallery 400, Columbia College,The James Hotel, and Devening Projects +Editions in Chicago, and The Richard Peeler...Category
