About the Item
Ambrosia Maple and Sapele wood
Wood, Stone, metals. It’s all about the materials.
That simple thought keeps me grounded in the moment. It’s how I stay focused on my art and approach to creating furniture that solves design challenges and pleases my clients.
Life has given me opportunities to do many things: running a successful show horse business, playing league tennis, learning the challenges of ice and rock climbing and even now in my early 80s, staying active and able to take on challenging ski runs in the western United States.
My sense of what works artistically has been part of my nature since I was a child. When the need for a technical skill came up, I asked the best craftsmen in that field for the information I needed to do what I wanted to do. Then off I went to learn by doing. When I wanted to explore a different art form or material, I tried it and applied it.
Beginning in 1994, the “just do it” approach moved me into making bronze sculpture and jewelry as well as mastering wood turning to create bowls, centerpieces and platters.
By 2008, my clients knew I would attempt anything. I took requests. That’s when I expanded into designing and building furniture using metals, stone and wood. Today, this is my joy and focus. I’m pleased to share this joy with you.

- Poem for a TreeBy Mark Beltchenko StudioLocated in Grosse Pointe Park, MIMy dedication to addressing environmental concerns through my sculpture has long been a subject for my work. By using my artistic voice to draw attention to the pressing issues facing our planet, I'm hoping to inspire change and raise awareness among viewers. The fabrication of the stretcher from brass and aluminum highlights my intentionality in material choice, symbolizing the intersection of human industry and natural resources. This juxtaposition of man-made materials with the organic form of the tree log creates a striking visual contrast that prompts viewers to consider the relationship between human activity and the environment. The use of a naturally hollowed tree...Category
