Richard Callner
Mixed media on Thick Paper --Sea 2002

2002

About the Item

With watercolors, pastels, and other media, this drawing on very thick paper presents in a non-naturalistic way a collection of sea creatures usually found on top or below the sand. These creatures, mostly in taupe hues, are surrounded by an organic design in light green and deep violet. The predominant effect is of muted and delicate colors. Signature on bottom right. Richard Callner is a painter who at various times was focused on myth, abstraction, interior landscape, and geometry. He led the Art Department at University at Albany, NY, thus influencing scores of artists who’ve gone on to recognition. Callner died in 2007, but his work remains in public and private collections from Israel to the United States.
