Ron Wilman
'Dust my Broom (for Elmore James)', Mixed Media Dada Collage

1985

About the Item

A mixed media Dada collage by Ron Wilman. The work is signed bottom right and resigned, dated and fully titled to the back panel, 'Colours May Fade Keep From Direct Sunlight. Dust My Broom (for Elmore James)'. There is also an exhibition label for 1986. presented in a custom made wood and glass case. Wilman has been inspired by the compositions of the Dada movement and the likes of artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Picasso. He has collated a selection of objects related to the theme of the work and things more esoteric, like the photo of the eye with the fingerprint. An amusing and thought provoking art piece. Dada was an art movement formed during the First World War in Zurich in negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war. The art, poetry and performance produced by dada artists is often satirical and nonsensical in nature. This collage was exhibited as part of the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign in 1986. This is a movement supporting peace and progress for the people of Nicaragua. Elmore James was an American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Noted for his use of loud amplification and his stirring voice, James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. His slide guitar technique earned him the nickname "King of the Slide Guitar". In 1951, Elmore James recorded the song as "Dust My Broom" and "made it the classic as we know it", according to blues historian Gerard Herzhaft. James' slide guitar adaptation of Johnson's triplet figure has been identified as one of the most famous blues guitar riffs and has inspired many rock performers. The song has become a blues standard, with numerous renditions by a variety of musicians. It also has been selected for the Blues Foundation Blues Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, and the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.

  • 'Danse Squelettes'. Abstract Expressionist Montage and Acrylic on Flour Sack.
    By Armand Avril
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Abstract Expressionist mixed media montage titled 'Danse Squelettes' by French artist Armand Avril, signed and dated 2002 bottom centre and signed, dated and titled with explanation of the inspiration of this piece to the reverse. Avril's inspiration here is drawn from an exhibition in the Grand Palais de Paris called, 'la mort n'en saura rien' in 1999/2000 in which works come together from across four continents to explore man's differing perspectives on death in different cultures. As always this mixed-media is created with the humour and joy and abandon that the artist puts into all his work. A very strong sculptural image. This montage is made on a flour sack with applied cardboard and acrylic paint. The more sculpted areas of the piece stand out to around 1.5cm from the frame. The piece includes the artist's favourite motifs of cats and skulls. Avril's work will always make you smile and has great energy. Armand Avril was born in 1926 in Lyon. His father, Marcel Avril, was a painter and collector of African art. At 16 Armand became an apprentice shepherd in Provence. Avril could always be seen equipped with a sketchbook and a book on the history of art whilst tending his flock. It was not until the age of 30, in 1956, that Armand embarked on painting as an autodidact, influenced by Raoul Dufy, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse and the Lyonnaise School of Painting. He exhibited for the first time in 1957. In 1960, he left for a one-year trip to Africa. There he met the painter Jean Arène who introduced him to the village of Cotignac in the Var and to Louis Pons...

The present work was created for this portfolio by one of Marcel Duchamp's friends, Shusaku Arakawa. It is signed, dated and titled on the front - and can be exhibited both vertically and horizontally - (see photos). The present work, along with others in the portfolio, was published in Japan and is rarely found stateside. Shusaku Arakawa (荒川 修作 Arakawa Shūsaku, July 6, 1936 – May 18, 2010) who spoke of himself as an “eternal outsider” and “abstractionist of the distant future,” first studied mathematics and medicine at the University of Tokyo, and art at the Musashino Art University. He was a member of Tokyo’s Neo-Dadaism Organizers, a precursor to The Neo-Dada movement. Arakawa’s early works were first displayed in the infamous Yomiuri Independent Exhibition, a watershed event for postwar Japanese avant-garde art. Arakawa arrived in New York in 1961 with fourteen dollars in his pocket and a telephone number for Marcel Duchamp, whom he phoned from the airport and over time formed a close friendship. He started using diagrams within his paintings as philosophical propositions. Jean-Francois Lyotard has said of Arakawa’s work that it “makes us think through the eyes,” and Hans-Georg Gadamer has described it as transforming “the usual constancies of orientation into a strange, enticing game—a game of continually thinking out.” Quoting Paul Celan...
