Sweet Annie

About the Item

Sweet Annie by artist Stephen Wilson is a contemporary figurative embroidered portrait, inspired by Andy Warhol's Annie Oakley 378 from the Cowboys and Indian Portfolio (1986). Sweet Annie measures 23 x 23 and is priced at $4,500. Stephen Wilson Born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, Stephen Wilson is a conceptual artist whose unique medium carries his message. Blending luxury fabric, 3D-printed sculptures, laser-engraved acrylics, and highly detailed embroidery pieces, Wilson’s manipulation of multiple materials produces wholly original works of art. His early career in the commercial fashion industry ,along with a wildly successful embroidery software company, has equipped Stephen with a range of technical skills. Wilson relays strong messages by channeling Americana, high fashion, and traditional crafts. About the Work The medium is the message. There is a long list of artists that create art using traditional means. However, Stephen Wilson is anything but traditional. The medium used for his pieces is predominantly fabric and thread, combined with sculptural 3D printing, laser engraving, and painting. When you examine one of his pieces closely you will notice that each line and element is created with thread on top of luxurious fabrics. Some of his pieces contain millions of embroidery stitches and take hundreds of hours to create. Fashion influence is prevalent in his pieces. The fabrics used include Hermès silk, Chanel wool, fabrics by Marc Jacobs, Oscar De La Renta, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Dolce & Gabanna, and Brunello Cucinelli. He is influenced by contemporary art, pop art, street art, graffiti, and iconography, as well as traditional quilting and handicrafts. Each piece is unique and expertly crafted in his Charlotte, North Carolina, studio, using both traditional and modern tools. Stephen Wilson is a conceptual artist known for work that blends a high fashion influence, traditional quilting, and Americana. He has been an industry leader in both the fashion embroidery and home embroidery world, as well as an industry speaker, writer, and educator. His pieces have been included in solo gallery exhibitions, group exhibitions, and museum shows, and are collected by art enthusiasts worldwide SOLO EXHIBITIONS 2016 New Gallery of Modern Art, “Beauty, Death & What’s Underneath” Charlotte, NC 2017 New Gallery of Modern Art, “Americana” Charlotte, NC SELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS 2016 Mint Museum, “80 x 80: An Art Show” Charlotte, NC 2016 The Grace, “Spaces” Charlotte, NC 2016 New Gallery of Modern Art, “Art Salon” Charlotte, NC 2017 Cornell Art Museum, “Fabricated: Contemporary Fiber Works” Delray Beach, FL ART FAIRS 2016 Scope Miami represented by New Gallery of Modern Art 2017 Scope NYC represented by New Gallery of Modern Art CORPORATE AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS Opera Carolina Hemby Children’s Hospital at Presbyterian Medical Center Coral Springs Museum of Art GALLERIES New Gallery of Modern Art DTR Modern Gallery DC DTR Modern Gallery Palm Beach

    Located in New York, NY
"Heads Will Roll" Textile Fiber Art, Discarded Clothing This piece is unique, signed on recto and verso, and includes a certificate of authenticity Linda Friedman Schmidt is a German-born American artist known for her emotional narrative portraits created from discarded clothing. She was born stateless in a displaced persons camp, the first child of Holocaust survivors who discouraged her interest in art. Her artwork depicts a reality informed by social, political, and feminist issues as well as a traumatic family history. Through a process of unmaking and remaking, she explores the potential of art to mend, transform, and heal the self and society. Her earlier artworks continue to endure today as they address inequality, violence against women, and the general sense of unease and vulnerability that has been heightened by the pandemic. Her artwork has been exhibited extensively in the USA in group shows at venues such as the American Folk Art Museum, Allentown Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Morris Museum, and many others. It has been selected for exhibition by prestigious curators such as Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, and renowned art critic Donald Kuspit. Her work has been shown internationally in Japan...
