About the Item

Lace thread drawing Framed (double glass frame with the artwork hanging between the glass) This piece was exhibited at Saatchi Gallery in London. It was part of an installation called 'Memory of the garden' – a flattening out of experience- a cataloging, archiving and preserving of lace-like words of personal letters which levitate without a ground to attach themselves to, fragile woven-skeletons of pressed flowers, leaves and seeds, floating in glass vitrines, seemingly embroidered on air, fossil like imprints of embroideries on plaster – a repository of the subtle armatures and structures upon which experience plumps itself out. Sumakshi Singh is an accomplished Indian artist known for her thought-provoking installations and mixed media artworks. Born in New Delhi in 1973, Singh grew up in a creative family with a deep appreciation for art and culture. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Delhi College of Art in 1995 and went on to earn a Master's degree in Printmaking from the same institution in 1997. Singh's work is deeply influenced by her personal experiences and the social and political issues that shape contemporary life. She explores themes such as memory, identity, and displacement through her installations, which often feature a mix of found objects, textiles, and traditional craft techniques. Singh's unique artistic vision has earned her numerous accolades and awards, including the prestigious Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Grant in 2001 and the Charles Wallace India Trust Award in 2005. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across India and around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Kala Ghoda Festival in Mumbai, and the Venice Biennale. In addition to her work as an artist, Singh is also a dedicated educator and has taught at institutions such as the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience with the next generation of artists, and her teaching has inspired countless young creatives to pursue their artistic dreams. Today, Sumakshi Singh is recognized as one of India's most important contemporary artists. Her work continues to push the boundaries of traditional art forms and challenge viewers to confront their own preconceptions and assumptions. Singh's unique artistic voice has made her a beloved figure in the global art community, and her influence is sure to continue to be felt for many years to come.
