About the Item

Indonesian shadow puppet/Wayang kulit, 19th century Wayang kulit, or Indonesian shadow puppets are typically carved out of water buffalo hide and wood. The puppets are works of art. Puppetry is an historically and culturally significant art form in Indonesian life. Indonesian puppetry is part of the animistic culture and ancestor veneration of Indonesia. The shadow puppet theatre originated in 800 AD and is considered the oldest freestanding puppet form. The theatre tells stories of heroic ancestors of Javanese kings, of quests, of battles, of ogres, and of romantic love. Wayang kulit combines deep spiritual meaning, entertaining storytelling, musicality, philosophical messages, current political commentary, and bawdy humor. The puppets are intricately designed, down to the most minute detail of costume and color, to allow the audience to distinguish among the different characters. The dhalang, or puppeteer, tells the stories with hand movements and narration. Traditional performances used cotton sheets and oil lamps to create the play of light. Electric bulbs or other sources of light are used today.
