About the Item
Colorado-based artist Zoa Ace creates oil-on-canvas paintings, watercolors, and collage work. She employs a mix of pop culture, animals, and nostalgic imagery in her scenes, often carnival-like or theatrical.
As a child growing up in Illinois, Ace loved to draw, and her favorite subject in school was Art. In the 1970s, Ace discovered Chicago’s Hairy Who artists represented by the Phyllis Kind Gallery. She viewed the recently uncovered murals of Henry Darger and other Outsider Artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art. These works influenced and inspired her, as did the bold gestures and imagery of the German Expressionists she observed at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Ace studied Art History in college, then later moved to Colorado with her artist husband. They began their art careers showing work simultaneously in Chicago & Denver before branching out to other parts of the country.
Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum, the Vance Kirkland Museum, and Denver’s Children’s Hospital. It has been displayed in the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C, and the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria.
Her work can be playful and thought-provoking. She finds making her living as a fine artist both satisfying and unpredictable. Ace endeavors to produce work that is engaging for herself and others.

Zoa Ace
Zoa Ace was born in Rockford, Illinois, in the 20th century. She is influenced by Max Beckman (1884–1950), who was a German painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Zoa's images are subconsciously manifested into a juxtaposition of themes and figures in motion.

- CrabsBy Ai WeiweiLocated in New York, NYAi Weiwei Crabs, 2010-11 Limited Edition, hand numbered Silkscreen on 100% Canadian 2-Ply Maplewood Skateboard. Signed on the deck 31 × 1 × 3/10 inches Edition 126/150 Signed on the deck. Hand numbered from the edition of 150 Highly desirable and sought after limited edition; long sold out worldwide. The text reads: "THE WORLD IS NOT CHANGING IF YOU DON'T SHOULDER THE BURDEN OF RESPONSIBILITY." This skateboard was inspired by the artist’s installation ‘He Xie’, a group of 3,200 ceramic crabs installed at Washington D.C.’s Hirshhorn Museum in 2011. "Crabs" refers to a slang word used for internet censorship in China. It plays on the similar sounding between ‘river crab’ and ‘harmonious’. “I think there is a responsibility for any artist to protect freedom of expression.” – Ai Weiwei “Without freedom of speech there is no modern world, just a barbaric one."― Ai Weiwei This photo is part of ‘Study in Perspective’ where Ai Weiwei openly attacks the regime in place by de-sacralizing one of the country’s most iconic and controversial sites: Tiananmen square...Category
