Birger Sandzen
"Summer Breeze", Woodblock print w/ artist ink-addition make this one-of-a-kind

About the Item

Birger Sandzén 1916 woodblock 2nd state proof printing with artist-applied ink on the print (as he worked out his 3rd state on this print) make this a one-of-a-kind piece. No toning - beautiful shape for its age. Also, framed beautifully. Sandzén worked in three primary printmaking mediums: lithography, block printing (including woodcuts, nailcuts and linoleum cuts) and drypoints. Throughout his career, Sandzén produced 207 lithograph, 94 block print, and 27 drypoint designs, for a total of around 33,000 impressions on paper. For his woodcuts and linoleum-cut block prints, Sandzén used a V-shaped gouge to carve out impressions in a piece of wood or linoleum attached to wood. After completing the carving, he would send the block to a printer (usually the Lindsborg News-Record or Bethany Press) where an edition of prints would be created. To print the block, a layer of ink was rolled on the surface of the cut wood or linoleum, a piece of paper was laid down, and then both were run through a press. The paperwould pick up the inked surface areas. Areas carved away did not register or print – showing only the paper. Once the edition was complete, the prints would be given to Sandzén. Like his lithographs, below the image he would write the title of the print and sign it in pencil. If you are interested in additional details about Birger Sandzen prints, I recommend the book written by Sandzén's son-in-law, Charles Pelham Greenough, which describes Sandzén's printmaking processes and lists all of his prints – with images of about 60 of them. The book is titled The Graphic Work of Birger Sandzén.
