About the Item

Edward Wells (1667-1727) A New Map Shewing…Places mentioned in the New Testament. The Land of Canaan. Sutton Nicholls, engraver Copper Plate engraving Later hand-color Oxford, 1700 19” x 15” Edward Wells was a man scholarly man and a teacher. At Christchurch College, of Oxford University, Wells was a professor of both geography and mathematics. Skills that would suit him well in his mapmaking endeavors. His best-known atlas, A new Sett of Maps Both of Antient and Present Geography, was an elaborate juxtaposition of the world in ancient and contemporary times. This group of maps is easily identified by the numerous framed cartouches and their bold print. The fine, heavy paper is watermarked. Known for his accuracy, Wells might also be regarded for his salesman ship. During his tenure at Oxford, Well had the good fortune to have, as his student, an heir to the Royal Throne. Thus, Wells took the opportunity to dedicate this atlas and each of the maps therein to His Highness William, Duke of Gloucester. This at once legitimized Wells standing cartographically and puts him in the good graces of the Throne. Alas, William was never to sit on that throne, as he died quite young, age 11, less than a year after the atlas was published. In this map we clearly note the marvel of the many Greek islands in the vast Mediterranean Sea. The hand coloring delineates sea from land and separates the various countries. Also of interest is an inset showing the proximity of Greece to the continents of Africa and Asia. This gives an understanding of the overlapping influence of the many cultures found therein. A large view of the topography of the Holy Land illustrates its enduring importance throughout the centuries.

Hand-Painted Gold Highlights. To produce a study for an historic illumination of antiphonals, the Arundel Society selected each of the alphabet letters from chorale books created in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Devotional pieces, the chorale music was greatly appreciated by Christians throughout the world. Often it was sung as responsive music where the choir would be divided into two parts thus creating a harmony which reinforced the Christian religious doctrine. As illustrious as the music, the key letters that headed each piece would take their own place in the art world. Many initials would be specifically devoted to prominent men and woman of both religious and cultural importance. For example, the “F” was devoted to Fra Angelico, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists...
