About the Item

Jean Eugene Gilbert Despres (1889-1980) was born in Avallon, a small town in Burgundy, where his parents had a small shop selling jewelry and gifts. At the age of 16, he went to Paris to apprentice with a friend of his father, who had a jewelry and metal workshop in the Marais. At night, he studied design. Any spare time was spent in Montmartre, where he met Modigliani, Soutine, DeChirico, Signac, and most important, Georges Braque, who, with Picasso was the founder of Cubism. Despres and Braque became great friends. Jean Despres was one of the most important French Art Deco designers, designing both metal objects, and extra-ordinary jewelry. This simple and elegant pair of candle holders exhibit some of Despres' favorite design element - reeding, hammered surfaces .They are in silvered metal - Despres seldom made objects in silver. Vases are made out of silver plated brass. Surface is hammered and have multiple decorative items attached. One of the semi-circular elements on each of vases has barely noticeable indentation. 19"h x 6"w Signature inscribed on the bottom C. 1930s Priced as a pair, but could be sold individually

  • Lady in a Garden
    By François Gall
    Located in Houston, TX
Francois Gall ( 1912-1987) François Gall was a Hungarian-born French painter best known for his Impressionistic style. Primarily focused on the figure, his brushy oil paintings are largely inspired by the Impressionist masters, Edgar Degas in particular. Gall often painted women engrossed in traditionally feminine activities—ballet, fixing their hair, sewing—rendered in loose, expressive marks and bright pastel colors. In addition to his figurative work, the artist also captured the French landscape, most notably the beach. In A Day at the Beach (c. 1948), loosely sketches bathers frolic under striped umbrellas in a picturesque rendering of French summer vacation. Born in 1912 in Transylvania, Romania, Gall received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Workshop Coromaldi in Rome, Italy. He would later settle in Paris in 1936, where he befriended prominent artists of the day—including Pablo Picasso—and became a naturalized French citizen in 1942. As his work grew in esteem, Gall was granted the Francis Smith...
