About the Item
"Breakfast in Merida (Homage to Carmen Miranda)" is an original woven wool tapestry with velvet fruit by Joan Ward Summers. It is a decorative tableau which displays a background pattern of blue and yellow abstract shapes. The tapestry also depicts a breakfast table, laden with cutlery and dishware, and it stands before what appears to be an open window looking out onto the sunrise. Hanging from the bottom of the tapestry are seventeen pieces of velvet fruit--the homage to Carmen Miranda. the work's bold patterning and unmodulated primary colors recall the work of Henri Matisse.
