About the Item
Pair of large oval-shaped baroque mirrors (II / II)
Roman master carver of the seventeenth century
Carved, lacquered and gilded wood
Antique mercury silvered glass mirror
92 x 76 cm.
(at the mirror 59 x 43 cm.)
We present this pair of prestigious oval-shaped mirrors (of which a second pair is also available, of excellent executive level, which interprets the period of the Italian Baroque in an exemplary way.
The works are in carved and gilded wood with a black lacquered background, richly decorated with a deep volute carving with particularly vigorous leaf motifs, coping and lateral ends embellished with cherub heads.
This type of boldly carved volute acanthus mirrors have been produced in various centers in Italy including Lombardy, Veneto and especially Rome, starting from the 17th century.
Our works in particular, which show a clear and unequivocal Baroque style design, are attributable to Roman workers still operating in the seventeenth century, revealing the direct formal influence of the architects and sculptors of the Bernini school. The density of the decoration and the strong contrast of the ebonized wood that highlights the gold carvings are in fact typically Roman elements in their conception, and are characteristic of the evolution of the Baroque style of the city of the second half of the seventeenth century.
Even the pomp of the decorations was well suited to the sumptuous interiors, of a representative living room of a Roman palace for which they were probably conceived, and which must have struck the visitor for the richness of detail and attention to detail.
The state of conservation is very good. There are small defects and wear, in keeping with the time, which do not affect its beauty.
The works, like all our proposed objects, are accompanied by an expertise of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law.
We personally take care of the professional packaging and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through tracked and insured carriers.
