About the Item
Alison Berrett “Clearing Fog” Oil on canvas 40cm x 100cm.
The soft pastel colours in this painting create a mysterious atmosphere. Inspired by the spring and autumn mists across the fields of my local landscape I have tried to create a sense of space and quietness. Symbolic shapes may evoke memories of the sun trying to break through the shrouds of mist and fog and there are suggestions of grass or other plants in the foreground alluding to the possibility of a landscape when the mists have cleared.
Alison Berrett is available online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Alison Berrett says: "I love the freedom of being an artist. Primarily I paint, draw, collage and photograph. I work with oil or acrylic paint on board or canvas, and occasionally, household objects. I also like to mix media, using wax crayons and oil pastels to create a resist with watercolour paints; or collage, charcoal and acrylic paint to explore textures. My inspiration is the result of a passion for the beauty of the natural world we live in. I take photographs of anything that catches my attention whilst out in the landscape as a reference point for my ideas and thoughts. It is also a way of visually recording and collecting images for a time when I can paint. I do not paint directly from the photographs but use them as starting points. Drawings, paintings and written notes are sometimes produced on site outdoors. I am often struck by dramatic lighting, the simultaneous contrast of colours or extreme weather conditions. Sensing the soul of the earth, I try to convey something of this inexplicable phenomenon in whatever I create. Sometimes I draw whilst carefully studying my subject without looking at the page. I am very interested in the quality of lines and marks this technique creates. I have also been investigating the use of drawing like this as a meditative process. Drawing and mark making has been a continuous area of interest since I first felt the urge as a child. I became liberated in my ability to express myself when in 1989 I attempted to draw and paint the sea during ferocious storms. I had to respond in an urgent, intuitive and spontaneous way, capturing the movement of the waves and wind and recording my own gestures and emotional response. This led me to create abstract works combining these gestures and emotions with a sense of movement and a fascination for colour and the application of paint. I find the transformational qualities of paint extremely satisfying. The paintings themselves are full of emotional expression and spontaneity; questions and observations about life often appear in my work as it progresses. Visual metaphors become apparent as I carefully work out the balance of composition, colour and mark. I rarely start a painting knowing what the end result will be but I have a very clear sense of my starting point. Then begins the organic process of bringing the work to life. I greatly value my role as a workshop leader (often as an artist in residence) and educator, encouraging other people to be creative. My experience in these areas is very broad and I am delighted that this continues to expand. I have created, and delivered dynamic educational programmes and workshops as well as pursuing and developing my own professional practice as a freelance artist. I have been involved in some extremely interesting, diverse and incredibly valuable projects and worked with some wonderful, creative, people. It is a privilege to be a part of the rich and energising world of Art."

- DivideBy Doug FreedLocated in Tulsa, OKDivide by artist Doug Freed is a deep blue contemporary abstract landscape oil on canvas painting that measures 72 x 96 and is priced at $18,000. Doug Freed attempts to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. In his luminescent multi-paneled oil paintings Freed tries to find the gray area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. Artist Statement For nearly twenty years, I made non-objective grid structured paintings. I started to see references to landscape in these works. I've literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels. Usually one panel is landscape imagery. The adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes. I try to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. My intent is to create paintings imbued with a meditative, spiritual presence suggesting issues about time and ecology. I do this by softly modulating color, tone and value. The color varies from quiet, monochromatic works to fully orchestrated chromatic ones. By blending from one hue to another I create color which makes its self gradually felt, weeping forth. In this manner, I create illusions of mysterious emanations of light, places where ones eyes and spirit are invited to linger. I try to imbue my work with a monumental presence, epic in both size and scope. I do this by orchestrating the separate elements of color, texture and structure into a harmonious whole. I seek a somewhat reductive image rich in value and contrast. The surface of the work is devoid of textural incidence. I don’t want anything to distract from the illusion of depth so I deny any marks which would hold the viewer on the surface of the painting. In my luminescent multi- paneled oil paintings I try to find the grey area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. The compositions are about ambiguities of form and void, foreground and background and surface and deep space. My roots lie in tonalism, color field painting and minimalism. However, my work contains an ever-present awareness of the dramatic use of light of the post-renaissance chiaroscurists. It combines a classical awareness of structure with a romantic use of color always in combination with a unique sense of ambiguity. My work continues in its evolution of style the search for an abstract means of probing the ambiguities of physical and spiritual experience of light, and its power to foster a more intense life of the spirit through profound emotional experience of form, color and composition.
