Anne Francey
Red Square (Modern Abstract Acrylic painting on Canvas)

1990

About the Item

"Red Square", by Anne Francey, painted in 1990 48 x 48 inches, unframed acrylic on paper pasted on canvas The prevalence of both nature and geometry in Islamic art both inspired and offered Francey a new way to explore the freeness of organic shapes within her work. A longstanding fascination with geometry, Francey took to painting architectural cityscapes when she moved to Manhattan that dominated the backdrop of her early American experience. However, having spent her childhood in Switzerland where it is virtually impossible to escape both the vastness and nuances of nature, she couldn’t help but indulge her curiosity in the unpredictability of nature, even within a metropolitan context. For example, smoke curling out of a window, a flower pushing up through the sidewalk, etc offered a variable whose intention cannot be planned. This painting is an earlier example of this inclination to explore nature in its most abstract form. The stunning crimson color that dominates the composition is almost translucent; paper absorbs the paint differently than canvas and here the artists takes full advantage of the illuminating effect. Loosely gestural markings suggest a blossom with petals careening in all directions. About the artist: Anne Francey was born in 1956 in Grandson, Switzerland. She attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (ECBA) from 1976 to 1981, where she received a diploma of Fine Arts in painting. In 1981, she moved to New York where she attended the School of Visual Arts and the graduate program of Fine Arts at Hunter College. She graduated in 1987 with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). She is the recipient of several grants from the New York State Council of the Arts for collaborative and community art projects and murals, and most recently was granted a Fulbright scholar award to create a community mural in Tunisia. Anne Francey lives and works in Saratoga Springs, NY. She has taught drawing, painting, ceramics, Islamic art design and visual concepts at Skidmore College and other universities and institutions.

  • Meet June (Abstract Expressionist Oil on Canvas in Grey, Pink and Green)
    By Jenny Nelson
    Located in Hudson, NY
Square abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in stone blue, green, dusty pink, and brown, with hints of orange throughout 'Meet June' painted by Hudson Valley artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2023 Oil on canvas 30 x 30 x 1 inches, with white painted sides Excellent condition, ready to hang Signed, verso This square abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2023. The colorful abstract composition is completed in an expressionist style with loose and gestural brushstrokes in calming tones of green, stone blue, and brown. The contrasting patches of dusty pink, teal, and brighter greens pop against the subtle pale gray background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting is unframed, with white painted sides so framing is optional. The artist's signature is located on the back of the painting. To say that Jenny Nelson’s paintings are a celebration of process as much as their final, balanced composition would be an understatement. Each one of Nelson’s compositions is a unique roadmap into how her brain operates. Curious, experimental, persistent, dedicated; hers is a confidence built over years of sustained diligence in the studio. Based in Woodstock, NY, Nelson has developed a unique language of artistic expression. Paintings in this series present improvisational, gestural strokes balanced with structure and open space. “By layering, adding and subtracting, a history develops on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected have an emotional charge. What started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative, carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving some life force intact”, says the artist of this process. Artist Statement: My work has always been anchored in drawing. I spent years drawing and painting from life. This instilled a strong sense of space and structure. At some point I became more interested in the negative space surrounding the objects I was observing and modifying the objects themselves. I began to organically develop an abstract language, but the sense of structure and organization remained constant in the painting. I apply paint in layers using palette knives, brushes and oil sticks. I initially draw loose gestures and a variety of spontaneous marks. Often traces of previous layers remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. This process leaves me feeling quite lost a lot of the time, and I have had to learn to become comfortable with that feeling. This sometimes builds to frustration, and I will scrape off much of what was applied, but the result of doing this is often something wonderful that moves the painting forward. I view the painting process as a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. It seems at first some exciting things may show up but it’s important to disregard these first, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper from them. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole. This way of layering, adding and subtracting, creates a history on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected over and over again have an emotional charge. This process that started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving the life force in tact. About the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Jenny has been exhibiting for many years nationally and regionally.
