Antonio Puri
Cincuenta 5: abstract painting on handmade paper from India, black w/ flowers

2017

About the Item

This is a sumi ink, acrylic, and mixed media painting on paper in black (or charcoal gray) with subtle appearances of flowers, leaves, and a white medallion. It is a highly textured work on heavy, handmade khadi paper from India, hand torn for irregular edges. This painting can be displayed in any orientation - horizontally or vertically. This piece works especially in a series -- six pieces available, each listed separately. I will combine shipping for your savings on multiple purchases within this series. Antonio Puri was born in Chandigarh, Punjab, India and raised in the Himalayas around Buddhist monks before studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Coe College, and the University of Iowa. During this time, Puri completed several artist residencies all over the world, including in New York, Hungary, Bulgaria, Colombia, South Africa, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Denmark, Trinidad and Tobago, and Romania. Puri’s range of geographical and cultural experiences are embedded in his work, where he commonly explores the relationships between his eastern and western cultural connections. Puri has exhibited his work all over the world, including at the Museo de Arte del Tolima in Colombia; Sundaram Tagore Gallery Singapore; Government Museum and Art Gallery Chandigarh, India; Art Depot, Austria; La Cometa Gallery, Bogota; Museo Casa Conde Rul, Mexico; The Guild, NY; Nu Art Gallery in Santa Fe; Twelve Gates, Philadelphia; Philadelphia Art Alliance; Noyes Museum, NJ; Essl Museum, Austria; Hammond Museum, NY; Queens Museum, NY; Sundaram Tagore Gallery, NY; Gallery Espace, New Delhi; Edsviks Konsthall, Stockholm; MOP Gallery, Sydney; Musee du Chateau, France; Corcoran Gallery in DC; and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, among others. • Ash: geometric abstract mixed media painting w/ red flowers, fruit & black lines
    By Mat Tomezsko
    Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Mat Tomezko's latest series of abstract mixed media paintings are constructed from traditional acrylic painting and the incorporation of ash into a hand-mixed paint of his own creation. This piece is part of a body of work that uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Ash" is a traditional still-life and landscape composition interrupted by broad black geometric chevron lines or "arrows" that divide the composition symmetrically in a geometric balance. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing. Tomezsko is an artist from Philadelphia who creates abstract paintings, public art installations, and community art projects based around participation and everyday visual language. His approach to composition is informed by mid-century formalism and conceptualism. His work was recognized by the 2017 Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review for outstanding public art. Tomezsko’s work has been exhibited at numerous art spaces regionally and nationally, including the Crane Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, the Center For Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), and Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia; Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL; the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE; and Thomas Hunter Projects in New York, NY. He has created several notable public art projects including "14 Movements: A Symphony in Color and Words," a mile-long temporary mural installed in downtown Philadelphia during the 2016 Democratic National Convention; "Look Long and Look Good," a series of 30 paintings currently installed along Main Street in Manayunk; and "Flowering Axes," a mural in the 5th Street Vehicular Tunnel underneath the Ben Franklin Bridge. His work is in the collection of The Wharton...
