Aron Hill
"A Setting Moon with a Turquoise Hill" Overlapping Color on Neutral Background

About the Item

This piece is framed. The unframed dimensions are 48 X 60 inches. Aron Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. He then completed his MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. From there, his work evolved into installation-based projects using traditional drawing and painting methods alongside formal sculptural elements, large format photography and text based work. Hill’s recent work has been focused on formalist paintings that recall aspects of minimalism as his color field paintings reference the figure throughout. He finds conceptual company in late Modernist paintings, particularly those produced in Canada. The use of a restricted medium—acrylic ink washes on prepared raw canvas—forces restraint. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness this medium produces. Aron has exhibited internationally, occasionally lectures, and writes.

"My art practice crosses three continents over two decades. The works consider the images and ideas that mark my journey into the spiritual and cultural dimensions of painting as a creative activity. During a period when I have carried adventurous journeys across several different social and geographic divides, I began to search deeper for an understanding of who I am, and where I am. My paintings started to explore the idea of self as the most fundamental element of human nature; I tried to seek my identity as I examined human nature." Hyunmee Lee was born in Seoul Korea, where she grew up practicing Western Modern art with experience in Eastern painting...
