About the Item

Abstract expressionist painter, Barbara Leiner engages with the landscape in a dialogue between line, color, texture, femininity, and emotional strength and vulnerability. Leiner draws her inspiration from the natural splendor and fundamental geometry of the landscape, exploring line and gesture through her painting. By experimenting with a process of layering color, she creates dynamic moments of energy and action syncopated with areas of rest and monochromatic stillness. Barbara’s elegant and sometimes chaotic lines dance cohesively together, developing a strong, coherent series of work. "My paintings represent a visual conversation that I have with landscape. Whether it be figurative, still life or generalized topography. Color and line drive me. A pulsating awakening as the painting evolves. Boundaries of the canvas, tension of color and form lead me. Life’s landscapes are the thread of my work, life and art coexist for me. Stretching my canvas begins my journey. I leave myself the freedom to go in any direction. The conversation begins with line; color and texture follow. I like to build and create lines and textures that compliment and challenge each other. I have always thrived on a push-pull energy, which keeps me alive and engaged in my work. I create, destroy and rebuild. Along the process I take the time to sit and observe, letting the work speak to me. Integrity and honesty in the creative process always foremost." - Barbara Leiner

"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...

  • REFLECTIONS 1 - Contemporary Atmospheric Landscape, Modern Seascape Painting

A few words of the artist about his art: When i painting landscapes, I usually choose simple geometric arrangements, contrasts of verticals and levels. I juxtapose the smooth surface of the sky with the rough texture of earth or grass. I paint symmetrical reflections in water and rhythmic repetitions of trees. Even an ordinary, seemingly uninteresting fragment of the suburban landscape hides a beauty that I want to see and then transfer to the canvas. I am inspired by nature because it contains a hidden secret of existence. For me, painting it is a reflection on life and passing away. It is an attempt to capture the imperceptible essence, to paint what cannot be seen. I think that my paintings can be a respite, an antidote for a man tired of technology, constant rush, hustle and bustle of the city. Grzegorz Wójcik...
