Benjamin Weaver
Expansion/Contraction #21: geometric abstract Op Art painting, blue-green orange

2022

About the Item

Benjamin Weaver creates spatial tension through his use of contrasting colors arranged in a geometric framework. Imagery and color work both with and against each other to create movement within the composition. By the artist’s careful placement of line and use of subtly graduated color, forms seem either to recede or project, constantly shifting within the picture plane. Weaver accentuates these structural relationships by working with a simplified palette and reduced forms, though the ideas at work in his compositions remain highly complex. This minimalist geometric abstract acrylic on canvas painting with a Pop Art flair is part of Weaver's "Cubes Divided into Three" series, with squares, rectangles, and polygons. It is signed and dated on the back. No need to frame -- includes hanging hardware and ready to install. Weaver’s work has been exhibited in galleries and juried shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and is held in the permanent collections of Capital One, the Fox School of Business at Temple University, Episcopal Academy, Cube Smart, The Dane, and many private collections. He maintains a studio in Philadelphia, PA.

  • Real Fire: abstract painting w/ spray paint graffiti tag in red & black
    By Mat Tomezsko
    Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Mat Tomezko's latest series of mixed media paintings uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Real Fire" depicts flames and fire above a segment of abstract forms in spray paint recalling street art and graffiti tags. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing. Tomezsko is an artist from Philadelphia who creates abstract paintings, public art installations, and community art projects based around participation and everyday visual language. His approach to composition is informed by mid-century formalism and conceptualism. His work was recognized by the 2017 Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review for outstanding public art. Tomezsko’s work has been exhibited at numerous art spaces regionally and nationally, including the Crane Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, the Center For Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), and Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia; Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL; the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE; and Thomas Hunter Projects in New York, NY. He has created several notable public art projects including "14 Movements: A Symphony in Color and Words," a mile-long temporary mural installed in downtown Philadelphia during the 2016 Democratic National Convention; "Look Long and Look Good," a series of 30 paintings currently installed along Main Street in Manayunk; and "Flowering Axes," a mural in the 5th Street Vehicular Tunnel underneath the Ben Franklin Bridge. His work is in the collection of The Wharton...

  • Fauve Flamingos: birds in landscape w/ blue water, pink mountains, palm trees
    By Joseph McAleer
    Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"Fauve Flamingos" is an acrylic on canvas painting depicting birds in a bright, whimsical Fauvist landscape reminiscent of the post-impressionist Henri Matisse. It is signed on the back. Edges are neatly finished and painted, so there is no need for additional framing. Every purchase comes with a free, hardcover copy of the beautiful illustrated new book, "Joseph McAleer: Sixty Years." "Joe McAleer's paintings engage us as participants in a complex perceptual game. Comprised of contrasting patterns of color, texture, and form, which fill the canvas from edge to edge, his restless abstractions elude a fleeting encounter. Rather, they absorb our attention with rhythmic structures and visual anomalies designed to stimulate and perplex our senses. McAleer's kaleidoscopic abstractions have their basis in the humble Modernist's grid,......" - Joe Houston, Author "Optic Nerve, Perceptual Art of the 1960s"; Curator, Hallmark Art Collection. McAleer is an artist and lifelong educator based in NJ. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rowan University, and has exhibited his work up and down the east coast, including major solo exhibitions at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and Locks Gallery...

  • Palavra #3
    By Paulo Canilhas
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
I am fascinated by the individual’s relationship within society. It is in this context that I exist. Along the beaten path, I allow myself to observe from a multitude of vantage points; towards the recent past or a future yet to occur. This is what inspires me- the creative moment yet to happen, laden with limitless possibilities. When I take a look at the past, I identify social and personal nuances and their direct influence on my work, and then with excitement look for what comes next. In this process I take distance from myself and view with a critical eye. Ever evolving, I search for more. I am neither a painter nor sculptor, much less a photographer or director, but I am a little bit of everything. I don’t feel bound to one specialized art form, and this allows me to navigate free and unencumbered by norms and expectations. My goal is not to achieve perfection in any one area, but rather to explore all disciplines- joyfully challenging myself, provoking and exploring beyond any pre-conceived limits. In my work I try to establish a connection between my reality and the reality of those who dedicate a few minutes of observation. I’m constantly searching for the vanishing point that gives diverse expression to my artistic production. This is the creative fuel that drives me ever forward. Paulo Canilhas...
