Gestural abstract expressionist style encaustic painting on panel Encaustic on panel 8 x 15.5 inches, ready to hang as is This contemporary abstract painting on panel was made by Rhinecliff, NY based artist, Bruce Murphy, in 2017. The small horizontal work is comprised of gestural applications of encaustic wax in hues of pink, orange and beige. The artist carved into the top layers of colorful encaustic to reveal under layers of green and purple. The encaustic was applied in layers, creating a slight texture upon the surface. There is a small d-ring on the reverse for installation. About the artist: Bruce Weldon Murphy was born and raised in Tyler, Texas. He later moved to Manhattan to attend Parsons School of Design to study fine art. After graduating from Parsons with a bachelor’s degree in painting, Murphy worked as a freelance graphic designer for various publications such as House and Garden. He continued to pursue his interests in painting and sculpture. At that time Murphy was primarily working in wood in a reductive style to create specific and varied natural forms. Recently Murphy has devoted himself to painting full time and has developed a personal process that gives a unique presence to his work. He uses industrial applications to a purely aesthetic purpose. Murphy sites Pierre Bonnard as one of his influences. Bruce Murphy has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery based in Hudson, NY for more than 20 years.
