Abstract, 1959 is a sophisticated Carl Holty, experimentingn with color, space, and form. Framed in a new white lacquer frame of high quality. An important artist in Art History who recently had a retrospective at the Georgia Museum of Art.
Sometimes he would work small and lay down color ideas that would help him to formulate moving on to a larger composition. These smaller works are complete ideas and compositions themselves and here we see him experimenting with the one yellow/ orange dot that floats amongst the blues and greens.
Carl Holty around this 1959 mark is about to make a major change in his abstract work, all revolving around theories in Color Field. Holty, as we see here, would work through ideas relating to how to deal with edges and or bleeding color or not and spatially playing with depth. The result in any individual canvas is a fun interplay that speaks to color, feel, and a general feeling from the abstraction which is life-giving.
