ABSTRACT
Inspired in the work of Franz and Ives Klein
This body of work was produced during the initial months of the lock down due to the pandemic. This tragedy created an opportunity to become aware of being in a bigger contact with my inner world. This new reality we are living will bring challenges and new opportunities. To evaluate what is truly important and what is not. My canvas evolves with no pre-conceived idea of what the end result will be. However, there will be a starting point; an emotion, a memory, could also serve as a point of departure. This process creates an unpredictable tension between the conscious and subconscious that resolved at its conclusion.
I attempt to create gestural stokes that are authentic, honest and organic . The intention is always to strive for a pure essence of abstraction.
The luxury of complete freedom in the abstract form is what inspires me. Emotions are expressed through the language of color, composition, form and strong gestural brush stokes. My large scale canvases are the culmination of a lifetime of creative vocation.
The pursuit of a creative life started at an early age. Growing up in Puerto Rico in the late 1950s, inspiration was all around me. The rich complexity of my culture ,the natural beauty of the countryside, and my early exposure to art all had an influence. This spurred my development along with international masters, Yves Klein, Franz Klein and Andy Warhol .
A recent visit to Paris exposed me to Pierre Soulages art at the Louvre Museum. I was taken aback at the force, simplicity and gravity of his strength and contemporary vision. I was drawn into the canvases and in awe of those intense and strong strokes and his use of black.
I draw inspiration from the mid-twentieth century New York school of abstract expressionists, , Hans Hoffman, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko. French artist, Yves Klein is also a strong influence.

Carlos Mercado Self-taught artist. Mercado has taken part in more than a dozen group and solo exhibitions in Puerto Rico and the United States since 1989. Considered a conceptual artist more than a painter and designer, he is influenced by Pop and Experimental art. His early works included impressions of his own body on cloth, which he achieved by drenching himself entirely in paint. He later worked with mixed media and collages and subsequently with abstraction. Within the Pop style, he has worked on portraits that capture the essence and feelings of the model.
Mercado is highly committed with his work. The fundamental aspects of this artist production are grounded in his dedication to the medium as well as his compromise with his point of view. The search for new ways of expression has leaded him to gradual changes in his point of view and stylistic modifications. In the last years he has explored big format art installations in open air spaces in Fuerte San Cristobal and Dorado Beach Ritz Reserve Puerto Rico in collaboration with Arte Fitts foundation . In may 2023 Mercado opened a Gallery space in Madrid in the prestigious zone Salesas, the new Soho of Madrid . Mercado is the cultural ambassador for the Tourism company of Puerto Rico , promoting cultural tourism and international exchange of artist from Puerto Rico and Spain . Carlos Mercado b.1958, Ponce, Puerto Rico

(framed) Please note: Our framing studio could not accommodate the scale of this work, so it is being sold as-acquired. Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...Category
