About the Item

"Right on Red," Oil and Acrylic on Linen, 11 x 9 Inches, is a vibrant and elegant geometric abstraction of one bright red floating square tilted on a field of brilliant yellow. Exquisitely crafted, there is a jaunty quality to this work and many of Gibbs' paintings in general. It is simply framed by the artist in a slightly distressed white wood strip frame. This is one of several new small geometric abstractions in sharp colors that work well individually or as part of a series. A second series of geometric abstractions focuses on more subdued, neutral colors: tan, green, black and white. These paintings occasionally incorporate actual 23 karat gold leaf as well. Larger related paintings are also available. Commissions are an option too, Gibbs has completed many. Charlotte Gibbs’ paintings of flags, such iconic Pop cultural symbols as the Coca-Cola logo, and the stark geometric forms identified with the Bauhaus and Minimalism startle our expectations of such classic imagery. Consistently to be found in Gibbs’ luxurious works is the artist’s keen knowledge of the history of art, her love of referencing it, and a subtle sense of humor. “Gold brightens up the darkest days of the year at Beth Urdang Gallery, and Charlotte Andry Gibbs makes liberal use of it in her paintings. Gibbs focuses on iconography, using gold leaf and paint to re-create flags, corporate logos, and legendary works of art. While crafting a gold American flag, or a Coca-Cola or Chevrolet logo in gold feels like a too obvious jab at capitalism, all the works together draw intriguing formal connections.” Cate McQuaid, “The Boston Globe,” January 12, 2013 Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had 3 one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides. Most recently Gibbs had the distinct honor of being awarded FIRST PRIZE in the Roddy Competition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts in Massachusetts where she was singled out among 540 SUBMISSIONS BY 340 VARIOUS ARTISTS by Katherine French, the Director.
