About the Item
Signed lower right, 'Chambliss' for Charlotte J Chambliss (American, 1910-2002) and dated 1962.
A large mid-century, American Abstract oil comprising overlaid and adjacent biomorphic forms in delicately muted shades of charcoal, dove-gray, coral, lilac, jade and peach.
Born in New Orleans, this notable African-American artist and educator first studied at Dillard University, Louisiana where she received her Bachelor of Arts. She subsequently attended Mills College in Oakland, then the California College of Arts & Crafts. Chambliss received her doctorate in education from UC Berkeley and later attended both the University of Oregon and the University of Aix Marseille, in France.
Chambliss began her teaching career in 1945 while establishing herself as an active member of the African-American arts community in the San Francisco Bay Area. She exhibited widely and with success from the 1960s to the 1980s, including at the Oakland Museum, the University of Washington and the California Art Association at Oakland among other venues. Chambliss is well-listed in all relevant art reference works including 'The Black Artist in America', 'Who Was Who in American Art' and '400 Years of Art in America'.
In 1982, Charlotte Chambliss's ground-breaking book, 'Now, Let us Pray' was published. It is now considered to be closely related to Frances Albrier's work and the associated advances in African American civil rights, Black history, United Negro Improvement Association, and the Tuskegee Institute (African American Museum and Library, Oakland, California).
