Charlotte Seifert
Waiting Years, Monotype with Chinecolle, Abstract Figurative Art, 30 x 22

2021

About the Item

Waiting Years is a Monotype with Chinecolle and displays bold and bright colors to highlight this abstract figurative work of art. This is a new series of monotypes by Charlotte Seifert that she began doing in 2021. It is 1/1 on paper in a custom frame which measures 31 x 23 framed. It is protected by conservation Plexiglass. Chine-collé or chine collé (French: [ʃin.kɔ.le]) is a printmaking technique in which the image is transferred onto a surface that is bonded onto a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, that pulls finer details off the plate. Another purpose is to provide a background colour behind the image that is different from the surrounding backing sheet. The final image will depend on the design and ink color of the printed image, the color and opacity of the paper to which the image is directly printed (plus any inclusions such as petals or fibers in that paper), and the color of the backing sheet. This Houston based artist has been making art for most of her life. She was trained at SMU where she earned her BFA and MFA in painting. Her first art instructor was Roger Winter who was teaching a high school class at the Dallas Museum of Art. Charlotte's work is largely abstract with landscape and nature elements incorporated into her work. Her inspiration comes from themes in literature, theology and personal history. Evoking an emotion or sense of place is Charlotte's focus rather than depicting a specific setting or rendering a certain object. Nature has become a metaphor for her for the current of constant change in life and love. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows, one-woman shows and groups exhibitions. Charlotte has been teaching art for many years through private instruction as well as at private a private classical school.

This is the only print so that is why it is a monotype. A monotype is a print, but with one major difference from other printmaking processes: the artist creates exactly one print, instead of multiples (called editions). This is due to the way a monotype is made. To make a monotype, the artist applies paint or ink directly onto the plate — which can be metal, glass, plexiglas, or even gelatin. The plate is pressed against the paper to transfer the ink. (So the finished print is a mirror image of what’s on the plate.) The printing can be done with a printing press or sometimes by hand. It’s a simple process that allows for lots of experimentation and variation. The artist can create layered prints, use objects as masks between plate and paper, or selectively apply pressure to create a trace monotype.
