Daniel Klewer
'Hollyhock Neptune' original acrylic painting signed by Daniel Klewer

2022

About the Item

'Hollyhock Neptune' is an excellent example of the paintings of Daniel Klewer, coming from his series 'Linear Tactility.' The paintings in this series all share a consistent, linearly divided composition with investigations into the visual and psychological resonance of color relationships and texture. Color relationships, texture, and a brushless paint application dominate the paintings’ surface, while also questioning the figure-ground relationship: The sculptural paint feels as if it is reaching off the canvas towards the viewer like the spines of a cactus. At the same time, the vibrant colors draw the viewer back to the paintings’ surface. 24 x 67 x 3 inches signed in ink on reverse unframed Daniel was born and raised in Milwaukee and majored in art at UWGB. He also earned a Master of Arts in visual studies degree from Cardinal Stritch University. He is now based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Klewer is best known for his painting process, which over the years has evolved into him nearly doing away with the brush and implementing a non-traditional paint application. Daniel’s love of oil and acrylic paint is evident in his treatment of his abstract paint surfaces. He enjoys a meditative, sequential process where the spontaneity of the material is allowed to influence the direction of the work. His oeuvre thus sits between the Hard-Edge abstraction of such artists as Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly and Martin and Carmen Herrera, and the gestural and spontaneous techniques of the Abstract Expressionists.

  • 'Leonardo & Rodin Dreaming of Jona Lisa' original signed mixed media collage
    By David Barnett
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Leonardo & Rodin Dreaming of Jona Lisa' is an original mixed media collage, signed and dated by the artist in the lower right. Part of Barnett's 'Famous Artist Series,' this vibrant collage pays homage to artists Leonardo da Vinci and Aguste Rodin by staging a visual conversation between their oeuvres. Below da Vinci's self-portrait, the Mona Lisa dreams of Rodin's thinker, played by artist and Barnett's close friend Joan Dvorsky, whom Barnett has nicknamed 'Joan of Art' and 'Jona Lisa,' an allusion to Joan d'Arc and the Mona Lisa respectively. The scene is surrounded by Rodin's figural drawings of dynamic nude forms in the upper and lower left and upper right corners of the composition. Although principally an homage to da Vinci, Rodin, and Dvorsky, the composition features a number of other artistic 'easter eggs' like the glass flowers that surround Dvorsky—the work of artist Dale Chihuly at the Garfield Park Conservatory—and the birch bark next to Dvorsky, a sample taken from Barnett's own 'Birch Bark Series.' Mixed media iridescent acrylic collage signed and dated lower right 23.5 x 20.875 inches, art 35.625 x 32.9375 inches, frame Signed and dated in lower right Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting with a 1/4 inch beige bevel, Museum Glass to inhibit fading and reduce glare, and housed in a rosewood-style wood moulding. David Barnett, an artist, collector, appraiser and gallerist has been passionate about art from the early age of five. David’s career as an art dealer began at age nineteen when, as a fine arts student, he sponsored an exhibition of work by fellow student artists. In 1985 David moved his gallery from Wisconsin Avenue into the Old Button Mansion on State Street and has been active ever since. David’s talents for recognizing undervalued artists and for meeting the needs of art lovers, art collectors and artists have created a vibrant, flourishing gallery and collection of over 6,000 works of art. David was born and raised in Wisconsin. He has been painting in watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels as well as fine art photography. David has more than 10 different series he has developed over the years. Born c. 1949 at Pikilyi, Vaughan Springs west of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory, he grew up ‘in the bush’. His father was an important tribal elder and medicine man at Yuendumu. It was therefore automatic that he would grow up with the traditional values and knowledge that now influences his paintings. Michael lived at Haasts Bluff until his parents took him to Yuendumu for European education at the mission school. He left school at thirteen, after initiation, and worked at buffalo shooting, driving trucks, droving cattle and in the army, before returning to Yuendumu and then to Papunya to settle in 1976. He worked for a time in the Government store and for the Council. Michael learned to paint at Papunya by observing the senior men such as Billy Stockman and Old Mick Tjakamarra. Although he was tutored by his uncle, Jack Tjupurrula, Michael developed his own style and began painting earnestly from 1983. Michael is known as master desert painter for his depiction of several Dreamings in one painting. For him the understanding of the Dreaming stories that go with his paintings is all important – without the stories his paintings would ‘mean nothing’ as far as he is concerned. His Dreamings include the Possum, Snake, Two Kangaroos, Rock Wallaby, Bush Banana, Honey Ant and Yam. In 1984 Michael won the National Aboriginal Art Award with his painting ‘Three Dreamings’. His reputation as a painter rose rapidly after this. He exhibited his work in the 1986 Biennale of Sydney and featured in ‘The State of the Art’, a British art documentary. In 1987 Michael had been asked to paint a major work (27’long) to decorate the foyer of Sydney’s Opera House and he chose to paint his ‘Possum Dreaming’ story. A great highlight in Michael’s career was in 1988 when he was commissioned to design a 196 sq-metre mosaic in the main forecourt of Australia’s new Parliament House in Canberra. The work was based on his ‘Kangaroo and Emu’ dreaming. Michael was presented to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11...
