"Changing Memories 2, " an Abstract Acrylic Painting signed by Deidre Schanen

2009

About the Item

"Changing Memories 2" is an abstract acrylic on canvas by Deirdre Schanen, signed on verso. Layers of browns, pinks, golds, and purples fill the canvas, reflecting a style reminiscent of the color-field paintings of Helen Frankenthaler and Mark Rothko. acrylic on canvas 36" x 50" canvas "My paintings reflect my childhood on the shores of Lake Michigan," writes Schanen. "They explore the tension of the lake’s serene vastness with the complex confusion of the rocks and detritus washed up upon its shores. My art reflects my world filtered through my heart. I do not plan my art but, rather, develop it as I work. Something in me knows where I’m going. Painting for me is a state of being. I paint what I am. I begin with pencil or ink markings and paint drips. I continue to add layer after layer of glaze, paint and markings. The underpainting is as important to me as the final layer of paint. I perform a dance with my canvas through these spontaneous interactions. I never know where it will lead me or when my dance will be finished."

I read that many artists are inspired by an idea before they begin their work and plan their approach and process based on that idea or muse. Others become inspired after they have begun working and watching colors, shapes and designs form. I basically belong the second group. Usually, after painting begins in a loose, free manner, I become excited by certain colors and patterns and continue from there." -Claudia Sisemore -- Caudia Sisemore says she was teaching English when artist David Chaplin (an equally popular and influential teacher) was at Weber and initially got her into landscape painting. “Then he took me to a show at the Art Barn and Lee [Deffebach] was showing there [with Don Olsen...
