Eliza Kopec
Rozetta System Seven - contemporary modern geometric paper relief painting

2022

About the Item

Rozetta System Seven is a unique contemporary modern sculptural paper relief by renowned Polish-Dutch artist Eliza Kopec. This relief is a typical example of her preferred minimalist abstract geometric vocabulary, formal and strict, but at the same time an aesthetic beauty that is very pleasing to the eye. Carefully hand cut round paper elements of different sizes (various colours on both sides) are mounted into a plain white background, allowing shadows and colour reflections creating numerous colour shades to fill the spaces in between. Looking at this work of art from upfront mainly shows the basic composition of the paper elements. But when moving to the opposing sides of this work, the full effect of the intriguing composition comes into play. This principle also places this type of work in the long tradition of optical art and kinetic art. Eliza Kopec (1960, Poland) graduated with a BA in graphic art and drawing from the (today) Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. After her graduation she started working as an independent visual artist and initially made many limited edition prints for numerous Dutch magazines. At the turn of the century she became more and more focussed on making abstract reliefs and paintings based on regularity and geometry. She works with different forms and sizes: she paints on canvas, makes installations with paper and creates paper reliefs. Sometimes monochrome, just white or black, making the repetition and shapes in a work even more apparent. At the same time she also creates bright multi-coloured work. Her work is often built up from basic geometric shapes such as lines, squares and circles and translates rhythm, texts and number series into abstract images, for instance represented by a defined range of colours. Starting point for many of her works are often concrete subjects like poems, newspaper articles or arithmetic principles. By translating these concrete subjects into shapes or colours she aims to create universal images of beauty. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows at galleries, art fairs, art circles and museums throughout Europe, including Pulchri Studio, Ars Aemula Naturae, KunstRAI and the COBRA museum. Private and public collections including work by Eliza are among others the Yellow Fellow Foundation (collection Verhoeven), Royal KPN, Royal PostNL, Cosmopolitan Hotel Las Vegas and Museum Het Valkhof. In 2018 a monograph was published covering many examples of her paintings, reliefs, drawings and mixed media works.

Cheung Yee, Cast Paper painting, wall sculpture, black, edition CHEUNG YEE (1936–2019) The Chinese artist Cheung Yee, a pioneer of the contemporary art scene in Hong Kong, died in Los Angeles on December 4 at the age of eighty-three. The Hong Kong Museum of Art confirmed his passing. Best known for his paper castings; bronze relief; and wooden, stone, and bronze sculptures, which mixed Western modernism, traditional Chinese aesthetics, and elements of folklore and ancient philosophies, Cheung cofounded the avant-garde Circle Art Group with Hon Chi Fun, Wucius Wong, and several other peers. The group was active from 1964 to 1971. Born in Guangzhou, China, in 1936, Cheung was raised in Hong Kong but was forced to leave the region when the Japanese invaded China during the Second Sino-Japanese War; his family relocated to Guangzhou. When the conflict ended, Cheung returned to the region and began learning Gongbi, a realist brush technique in Chinese painting. In the 1950s, he studied art at Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, where he met his wife. Throughout his schooling, Cheung pursued his interests in archaeology and began experimenting with different materials and with approaches to copperplate etching, welding, and modeling. In 1964, Cheung’s first major retrospective was organized by the City Museum and Art Gallery at Hong Kong City Hall. The following year, he received a grant from the Institute of International Education to study in the United States and Europe. Since then, he has had solo exhibitions at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, AO Vertical Art...

Educated at Hunter College in New York, he has shown consistently in solo and group exhibitions since 2002, including locations in New York, Berlin, Los Angeles, Basel, Madrid and Paris. He currently lives and works in New York. Through his abstract paintings, drawings and sculptures he finds the sweet spot where minimalism, Pop Art, and the political collide. Andisheh Avini is known for his patterned silkscreen painting created on carpet and wood, which are informed by the history and culture of Iran. Avini frequently takes familiar political images and recontextualizes them, prompting the viewer to consider Middle Eastern politics from another perspective. Blending the visual vocabulary of his Iranian heritage with aesthetic and material experimentation, Avini’s work offers a meditation on the experiences and memories that shape our identities. He has used a variety of exotic materials including marquetry or Khatam – a traditional Iranian craft of inlaid wood, crystalline protrusions of actual minerals, peacock feathers, mother-of-pearl and parchment often in abstract geometric compositions, mediums associated with traditional Persian craft— with nods towards Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and other Western art movements. He has shown in many prominent galleries including solo exhibitions at Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Galerie Frank...
