About the Item

Ellis Jacobson (San Diego, 1925 - Palma de Mallorca, August 23, 2013) was an American cartoonist and painter who lived most of his life in Palma de Mallorca (Spain), where he developed his work. He studied at The Art Institute in La Jolla and at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Very attracted to the world of comics, he began as a cartoonist making caricatures of Hollywood actors and actresses. He then traveled to Europe to stop in Paris, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumièr and was able to meet Picasso. He continued training in Rome at the Studio Hinna, and at the beginning of the 1960s he visited Spain and settled in Palma de Mallorca. A man of stubborn and energetic character, he always wanted to be away from the part that art has in the market. This complex relationship of an artist who lived from his work, led him to deny the sale to those who did not like him. In Mallorca he made friends with other Anglo-Saxons who settled there, such as the writer Robert Graves, and with Spanish artists such as Joan Miró.3 A great draftsman, he dedicated part of his work to capturing the passage of time and suffering in portraiture. Joan Carles Gomis has pointed out about this, «Ellis decided a long time ago that his painting is on the side of those who suffer and the losers». Restless, he worked both figurative painting and abstract expressionism. He maintained in his life the passion for both pictorial techniques and, in addition, he methodically developed each one in separate studies. He has been recognized for his great knowledge of drawing and color in all its manifestations and used all kinds of techniques and materials, feeling a preference, over the years, for paper.13 His work is exhibited in different museums and has toured different countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom or Italy, in addition to the United States and Spain.

Shawn Dulaney’s paintings are layered constructions of color, spacious abstractions that read like cloud banks, flows of water, magnetic fields charged with monumental energy. Dulaney spent her childhood on a vast Colorado plateau looking west to the Rocky Mountains and has travelled widely, immersing herself in landscape. Her work captures the experience and feeling of place. Doug McClemont of ArtNews writes that Dulaney’s paintings “concern the earth, and the unyielding hand of nature”. Her work has been described by William Zimmer of The New York Times as belonging to “a very strong tradition, that of 19 th -century Northern European Romanticism in which nature was seen as corresponding to human emotional states.” He says of her work, “Ms. Dulaney makes it clear that her inner life is very much a part of each painting, and this alone distinguishes it from most abstraction…Shawn Dulaney is deliberately out for grandeur, but she is also out for intimacy. Her paintings take advantage of their innate ambiguity and declare themselves to be very current in the thinking that lies behind them.” "The kind of painting to which Ms. Dulaney's work is most closely related, at least superficially, is the Mark Rothko branch of Abstract Expressionism, in which a sense of deep space is sought." Dulaney makes handmade paints consisting of acrylic medium and powdered pigments allowing her to get a wide range of saturations and transparencies as they spread out on Venetian plaster and linen over panel. “Her surfaces”, as described by Dominick Lombardi-also of The New York Times, are “exquisitely painted and a pleasure to see.” Dulaney continues to travel between New York, the American Southwest, and the United Kingdom, as well as having recently been awarded the Pink House Artist Residency on the Beara Peninsula in Ireland. Her paintings capture the ephemeral and evoke the Celtic notion of a “thin place”, a place of energy where the veil between this world and the eternal is thin. A working artist for over 4 decades, Dulaney is represented by Sears Peyton Gallery, Weber Fine Art, Carrie Haddad Gallery and Beth Urdang Gallery. Exhibited widely, her paintings can be found in extensive public and private collections including those of the Hunterdon Museum of Art in NJ, the Venetia Resort in China, J Crew in NYC, as well as in the private collections of author Annie Proulx, actor Steve Buscemi, talk-show host Conan O’Brien and musician Stuart Copeland. Her work has appeared in episodes of TV’s Enlightened, Portlandia and Sex & the City, and the films It’s Complicated (2009), Interview (2007) and John Wick...

  • Large Abstract Expressionist Taiwanese Painting Chihung Yang Chinese Art
    Located in Surfside, FL
Chihung Yang American (b. 1947) Untitled (Black and Brown Composition) (1986) Mixed media (acrylic, pastel) on paper Hand signed lower right Sheet 38 x 50 inches, frame dimensions: 45 x 57 x 2 inches, wood frame with glazing Provenance:= From a Corporate Art Collection Yang Chihung (Chinese: 楊識宏; pinyin: Yang Chihung; born 1947) Taiwanese-American artist. Yang Chi-hung was born on 25 October 1947, in Chungli, Taiwan. He developed an interest in art in early childhood, and found inspirations to pursue an artist career after reading Lust for Life – The Life of Vincent van Gogh, translated by poet Yu Kuang-chung, in junior high school. Between 1965 and 1968, he attended the National Taiwan College of Art, developing a sound foundation in oil painting under the tutelage of famous Taiwanese artists of the Japanese Colonial period, such as Liao Chi-chun, Li Mei-shu and Yang San-lang. Meanwhile, he actively attended events organized by the modern art groups of Taiwan, namely the Fifth Moon Group and Ton Fan Group, only to find himself both intimidated and dissatisfied with the then relatively conservative art environment in Taiwan. In 1979, he emigrated to the United States of America with his wife, Jane, and their son, Daniel. His pioneering works soon landed him the “Outstanding Asian-American Artist” award. The concept and style of abstract expressionism as represented by the works of Jackson Pollock in the 1950s had great impact on Yang’s work. With the sense of nihilism that gave rise to abstract expressionism in the post-war period, artists no longer clamored to depict the external environment, but rather chose to focus on their own inner experience. Yang Chihung embraced this spirit about the early 1990s when his style turned abstract. In 1984–85 and again in 1985–86, he was twice awarded a year's residency at The Clocktower Studio in New York City by MoMA P.S.1. In 2013, Yang, along with Xu Bing, Zhang Huan, and Li Chen, were the four artists featured in the Discovery Channel Asia documentary series, Chineseness, a multi-series production that focused on postwar Chinese contemporary artists.
