Erik Scholz
Head VIII

1993

About the Item

Erik Scholz was a Hungarian artist who trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He was awarded the prestigious Munkácsy Award in 1950, and received stipends to work and study in Paris later in that decade. Between the 1950s and 80s, his work was shown at the Salon d'Automne, in group exhibitions at the Hall of Art and the Museum Ernst in Budapest, at Art Basel in Switzerland, at the Kunsthalle Tübingen in Germany, and at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna, Austria. Scholz withdrew in 1987 to the village of Zsennye. He retreated entirely from the art market, as he entered a new creative period which was both personal and singular. Combining wood ash from his stove, and organic materials such as twigs and branches with his paint, he created structures that are near-animate, are both natural and creative. The layered surface attracts, reflects and diffuses light and interacts with the viewer. Our "Head" is an excellent example of this. Oil, wood ash and mixed media on panel, the artwork measures 53 x 38 cm. It is signed, dated (19)93, situated Zsennye and titled "Fej VIII" (Head VIII) on the verso.
