Frank Avray Wilson
Abstract 1983 - Green Yellow - British 20th century Action art oil painting

1983

About the Item

This stunning Abstract oil on carboard painting is by noted British artist Frank Avray Wilson. It was painted in 1983 and given to Wilson's good friend and holiday companion, the late Jon Wynne-Tyson, English author, publisher, Quaker, activist and pacifist, who founded Centaur Press in 1954. Wilson was the first painter in England to apply the techniques and methods of Action Painting and Tachism, seeing colour as energy and alive. This vibrant yellow and green image certainly buzzes with energy and life with beautiful use of impasto. A stunning example of his work. Signed and dated '83. Provenance. Given directly by the artist to previous vendor, the late Jon Wynne-Tyson. He and Wilson were good friends and used to holiday together. Condition. Oil on cardboard, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame, 38 inches by 33 inches and in good condition. Frank Avray Wilson (1914-2009). Abstract Expressionist painter, printmaker and writer Frank Avray Wilson studied art in France and Norway and was the first painter in England to apply the techniques and methods of Action Painting and Tachism. In 1956 he helped form the New Vision Centre Gallery, which became a showcase for Modern and Abstract work. Avray Wilson came to Abstraction following years of scientific research into the source of human aesthetics. Once he discovered that colour is not matter but energy, that an image could be as alive as a living cell under a microscope, Avray Wilson reached full Abstraction during the early 1950s. His so-called 'vitalist imageries' are explosions of colour and shapes bursting into strength and liveliness. During the 1950s and early 1960s Avray Wilson enjoyed a celebrated status with no less than twelve one-man shows held at prestigious galleries in London (Redfern Gallery), Paris (Fricker) and Brussels (Helios). Since, his art has been firmly inscribed in Art History as ‘Tachist’, the European form of Action Painting. A true nomad at heart and naturally multicultural, Avray Wilson was universal in his thinking and his art-making, with a strong belief in the integrating powers of art. During a varied career Avray Wilson has been a lecturer and author, whose publications include 'Art as Understanding'. Avray Wilson's paintings are present in the following museums: British Museum, London; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, USA; Cleveland Museum of Modern Art, Ohio, USA; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester; Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, Northampton; Southampton City Art Gallery, Southampton; Toledo Art Gallery, Ohio, USA; Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
