Untitled CIX is a large-scale painting by French contemporary artist Frédérique Domergue.
Oxidized zinc and bronze leaf on wood panelling, patina fixed with beeswax polish, 180 cm × 120 cm.
Through polishing and oxidation, Frédérique Domergue bestows upon metal a warmth, softness and sensuality which makes you want to caress the oxidized surface of her paintings that have become all radiant and silky. The artist gets her inspiration from nature and the sea-side. Her paintings evoke landscapes, skies and seas that are sometimes calm and tranquil, sometimes stormy, dark and ablaze. The horizontal line around which many of her compositions revolve is the place where land, sea and sky mix and mingle. The very place where the elements fuse.

Frédérique Domergue
Fascinated by metal, Frédérique Domergue has developed a unique two-dimensional body of work that draws on both sculpture, through the use of relief, and painting, through the research of different colour shades obtained with oxidation. The artist uses thin sheets of metal applied on wood or aluminium panels. Through a patient process of polishing and oxidation she manages to confer astonishing warmth and sensuality on the metals. Frédérique Domergue finds her inspiration from nature and the seaside. “I have always liked the material – I had to touch it, knead it, transform it, see it evolve under my hand. I’ve always been fascinated by what I could achieve with it.’’
