Geert van Fastenhout
Painting No. 5

1988

About the Item

Geert van Fastenhout works in a long, respectable Dutch tradition of painting, that of geometric abstraction. He paints rectangular surfaces and beams in black and in heavy, covered tones red-brown, gray-blue, purple and brick-red. The colors each have a different degree of saturation and therefore their own texture. Shiny blue bars lie on a matte black ground, or matte black surfaces can float in shiny black. There is an enigmatic light effect in these paintings, which consist of a very thin coat of paint, because Van Fastenhout with angelic patience is always sanding away layers of paint and showing the structure of the linen. 'It is not too far here and not further', it seems gray-white to say. The black and blue, on the other hand, suggest an unfathomable depth. It is surprising how much emotionality a strict abstract, geometric work can evoke. The painter consciously works with small formats that reinforce the intimacy of his work. The gaze is led inside and there is a simple but refined beauty, a noble shadow, which is not screaming and dominant.
