About the Item

Antique American modernist abstract oil painting by Harriet Nash. Oil on canvas. Framed. Signed in monogram and dated 1953. Artist Bio Harriet Holden Nash (1933 - ) Harriet was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and lived with her husband in Park Slope for over 35 years. She attended the Brooklyn Museum School at age 14 where she established her reputation as an abstract expressionist at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art. She later attended Cooper Union, and was under the tutelage of such esteemed artists as Louis Grebenak as well as Willem De Kooning. Harriet was known as an abstract expressionist from early on in her career, and exhibited at the young age of 17. She enjoyed painting large canvasses, and her subjects ranged from pure abstractions to those of the human form to trees and flowers, as well as urban landscapes of scenes she was familiar with, including the Lincoln Tunnel helix and entrance from Weehawken, New Jersey. She notes her artistic influences to be Arshile Gorky, Pablo Picasso, and Willem De Kooning, as she was very focused on abstract shape and forms. She also liked to experiment with color, and was attracted to bright, striking colors. Nash was most prolific as a painter using first oils and then acrylic, but also was known to create clay sculpture as well as forms created with found objects. Nash was very involved with the art community in Brooklyn, and served for several years as a Trustee and even Chairwoman of the Community Gallery of the Brooklyn Museum School, organizing shows displaying the diversity and talent of local area artists. Nash exhibited her work several times over the years, beginning with her days at the Brooklyn Museum School. She later exhibited with Elizabeth Delson in 1969 at the Paerdegat Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library for the Contemporary Artists of Brooklyn Group Exhibition. She was also part of the "30 at 303" exhibit of drawings held at The Brownstone Gallery in Park Slope for the benefit of the Community Gallery of the Brooklyn Museum in the spring of 1970 with artists Lennart Anderson, Harvey and Simon Dinnerstein, David Levine, and Louis Grebenak to name a few.
